Two-stroke-cycle engines.-In an engine using crank-chamber compression and having one or more pairs of cylinders arranged as shown in Fig. 1, admission of charges to the crank chamber is controlled by a cam-actuated beat valve C and the burnt gases are exhausted through mechanically-actuated valves in the cylinder heads. More than one exhaust valve may be located in each cylinder and more, than one admission valve. C may be used in the crank chamber, all the valves being actuated by cams on an extension of the crank-shaft. Charges enter the cylinder through piston-controlled terminal ports J. The exhaust valves open when the crank has reached a position 92‹ from its inner dead-centre and close 43‹ beyond the dead-centre. The ports J open when the crank has moved through 133‹ from its inner dead-centre and close 47¢‹ beyond the lower dead-centre.
