Four-stroke-cycle engines; cylinders, construction of. - Oppositely moving pistons have hemispherical cavities 10 in their heads to form the combustion chamber, and both crank-shafts carry fly-wheels. The admission and exhaust valves 36 are opposite each other and are masked by the pistons at the end of the instroke. A spark plug 30 passes through notches in the pistons to the centre of the sphere; it serves as a passage to relieve compression at starting. Normally, ignition is effected by a wire 44 kept hot by the combustion.
