Two- and four-strokecycle engines. - Clearance spaces 6, 7 of differing volumes are provided in adjacent cylinders 1, 2, such spaces being in permanent communication by a passage 8 of capillary section, and, for the great part of the piston strokes, by way of ports 10. Spontaneous combustion takes place in the smaller space 7 and effects ignition in the larger space 6. Either cylinders or pistons of differing length may be used to produce the differing clearances.
