Abstract

152,314. Rumpler, E. July 12, 1920. No Patent granted (Sealing fee not paid). Regulating; valve-gear.-In valve mechanism comprising a single cam 1, Fig. 1, for operating both the inlet and the exhaust valve, the two valve levers 2, 3 are mounted on the same spindle 4, and the parts of the levers which engage the cam or the tappet-rods are differently shaped in accordance with the different times of opening required for the respective valves. The lever arms 2, 3 may be integral with one another and the cam recessed, as shown in dotted lines. The cam-disk may be mounted eccentrically to the cylinders. as shown in Fig. 6, the cam being formed on an internally toothed wheel 10 driven by a pinion 9. In this arrangement, the levers 2, 3 engage tappetrods 12 connected by links 13 to an overhead valve lever 14, the parts forming a rectangle a, b, c, d. In a modification of this arrangement, the tappetrods are parallel to the cylinder axis but out of line with the points c, d, so that the points a, b, c, d form a parallelogram. As applied to a twocylinder vertical engme, Figs. 7 and 8, a short cam shaft 23 is arranged at one end of the crank chamber, with a single cam 24 for each cylinder. Each cam works the inlet and exhaust valves of one cylinder through a pair of levers connected by links 26 to an overhead rocking lever 27. The bosses of the levers 27 are formed as concentric tubular members 28 having valve-actuating arms at their ends. This arrangement of overhead levers may be applied to the valves of more than two cylinders. The cam shaft 23 may be arranged at the middle of two cylinders or groups of cylinders. The timing of the inlet or exhaust valves, or of both, may be varied by adjustment of the pivot 4 of the valve levers about the axis of the cam shaft, and the bearing-faces of the levers may be so formed that the adjustment may alter the time of opening without altering the time of closing of the valve. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) describes also the following subject-matter which does not appear in the Specification as accepted :- Valve-gear.-In the arrangement shown in Fig. 12 (Cancelled), the cam 51 is concentric with the crank-shaft and driven from it by bevelwheels 32, 33 and 49, 50, and the countershaft 34 drives an extension 36 which is axially adjustable and carries a tapered cam 41 for actuating the fuel pump. Cylinders, cooling; lubricating.-The countershaft 34, Fig. 12 (Cancelled), also drives the water-circulating pump 39, and an oil-pump 37 for lubricating. Casings.-The links 26, Fig. 7, transmitting motion to the overhead valve levers pass freely through a housing formed in the cylinder casting, and in a modification this arrangement is shown applied to a single valve-rod. Cylinder heads and valve-chests, forms of.- In the two-cylinder vertical engine, Figs. 7 and 8. a single casting with plane under surface forms the head for both cylinders and contains inlet, exhaust, and water passages, and carries the valves, springs, overhead gear. and top cover. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 14391/03 and 28691/06.
