Abstract

175,172. Marchand, H. Jan. 14, 1921. Valve-gear.-In an engine having a single cylinder or parallel cylinders, the inlet and exhaust valves D are arranged with their stems J parallel with one another and at 45‹ to the cylinder axis, the heads of the valves lying both to one side of the cylinder axis, and the ends of the valve stems lying both to the other side. This arrangement permits of forming the cylinder, combustion chamber, inlet and exhaust ports and manifolds, valve-gear housing, and water jacket in one casting, with the walls of the combustion chamber O, P readily accessible for cleaning. The valves are actuated from cams on an overhead shaft by levers T mounted in a casing Z which forms a constant-level oil bath. The oil level is lower than the upper end of the valve-stem guide, and the cam shaft and cams and the pivot of the valve levers are below the oil level.
