Abstract

635,240. Casings; cylinders. PESCARA, R. P. March 28, 1947, No. 8467. Convention date, June 10, 1943. [Class 7 (ii)] In an internal-combustion engine having a plurality of in-line cylinders, each cylinder having overhead inlet and exhaust valves actuated through push rods from a single camshaft mounted near the lower end of the cylinders, and in which the stems of the valves of each cylinder are located approximately in a transverse plane with respect to the longitudinal axis of the engine, the cylinder head or heads are so constructed that the cooling water passages for cooling the valve seats and guides are confined to welldefined portions of the cylinder head so that there are left regions of the cylinder head or heads accessible from the side and having a height less than the height of the portions in which the sparking plug or plugs of each cylinder are mounted, each of the regions extending to or communicating by a passage with the side of the cylinder head to allow the free escape of oil, water or other liquid therefrom, and there being a cover or covers detachably secured to the cylinder head or heads which enclose the rocker arms, their pivotal axes and the external extremities of the valves and of which the shape as seen in plan view corresponds to the periphery of the portions of the cylinder head or heads carrying the cooling water passages. The valve cover for a four cylinder in-line overhead valve engine is shaped as indicated by its gasket 226 so that. sparking plugs 222, 322, 422 and the. ends of the top of the cylinder head are left uncovered. A region 235 in which the sparking plugs 322 and 422 are situated only communicates with the outside through the passage 250. The height of the cylinder head in the uncovered parts 234 and 235 is just sufficient to accommodate. the water jacket. The sparking plugs, one or two of which may be used in each cylinder, are inclined to the cylinder axis so that the electrodes are positioned near the centre of each combustion chamber in the end wall of which latter are situated an inlet and an exhaust valve. When two sparking plugs are used in each cylinder the inlet valve rocker arm is located in a plane perpendicular to the plane containing the axes of the two plugs and midway between these axes. In a modification for two cylinder engines, the covers thus formed may be used with each pair of a four, six or eight cylinder engine.
