Abstract

720,432. Valve gear; inlet and exhaust passages. BAYERISCHE MOTOREN WERKE AKT.-GES. July 15, 1952 [July 16, 1951], No. 17813/52. Classes 7 (2) and 7 (6). In a cylinder head and valve gear for an engine with in-line cylinders and hemispherical combustion chambers with dependent valves arranged in V-shape in the cylinder head wherein the axis AA, Fig. 3, passing through the centre-points of the valve seats of any cylinder is inclined to the plane BB containing the cylinder axes and is perpendicular to the valve rocker shafts 7 adjacent to the cylinder, a single rocker shaft is mounted between each pair of cylinders and is fitted with two valve rockers 4, 41, each of which actuates a valve of one cylinder of the pair, whilst at each end of the cylinder row one valve rocker only is arranged on a single shaft, and all the rockers are actuated in a known manner by push rods from a low mounted camshaft. The rocker shafts are arranged so as not to extend beyond the side of the cylinder head. The exhaust and inlet ducts 10 and 11, respectively, are provided on opposite sides of the head and the sparking plugs 12 are located midway between the valves and are readily accessible from the top of the head ; the inlet ducts 11 each open tangentially into a cylinder and produce a whirl of the mixture towards the associated sparking plug. The axis through the push rod end and valve end of one rocker crosses the corresponding axis of the other rocker ; the valves of each cylinder may form an angle of 90 degrees. In a modification the outer valve rocker 21, Fig. 4, is journalled on the hub 23 of the push rod arm 24 of the inner rocker, the valve arm 27 of which is connected through a clamp 26 and splined or grooved part 25 to the hub 23, the rocker 21 abutting shoulder 29 ; the tappet cups 28, 281 for both push rods lie in one plane perpendicular to and equidistant from the axis of the rocker shaft 22. When the invention is applied to in-line "V" engines the low mounted camshaft is located between the cylinder rows.
