Abstract
199,023. Metten, J. F. June 9, 1922, [Convention date]. Cylinders receiving liquid fuel.-Double-acting twocr four-stroke cycle engines have the cylinders 7, 8 in pairs, the compression space at the top of cylinder 7 communicating with the space at the bottom of cylinder 8 through the lateral combustion chamber 16. The other two ends of the cylinders are connected' through a second chamber 17. By this arrangement valves need not be placed on the stuffing box sides of the cylinders, the valves at the cylinder heads serving both ends. The combustion chambers are wholly enclosed in the water jacket. Liquid fuel is sprayed along the combustion chamber either by a centrally-arranged nozzle 35 or by two nozzles at opposite ends of the chamber. The inlet and exhaust valves may be arranged in the combustion chamber.
