Abstract

680,673. Cylinders; cooling; valves. HAMMOND, E. V. April 17, 1951 [June 12, 1950], No. 14589/50. Classes 7 (ii) and 7 (vi). In an internal-combustion engine with overhead horizontal inlet and exhaust valves comprising independent chambers 3 of circular bore formed at the head of the cylinder 1, and a barrel 11a entering each chamber 3, each barrel forming a seating for one of the valves 12, it is arranged that the lower part of each chamber 3 forms an entry into the cylinder bore. The cylinder 1, cooling jacket 2 and crankcase 7 comprise an integral unit which is provided with lugs 8 for attachment to a bedplate 10, whilst in the upper part of the cylinder and cooling jacket are provided the chambers or valve ports 3 that are arranged to extend above and below the flat cylinder head 16 and having the lowest part thereof level with or slightly above the piston 15 when the latter is at the top of its stroke. The exhaust valve box 11 which is integral with the barrel 11a is secured to the cooling jacket, and an opening 6a provides communication between the exhaust valve cooling jacket 14 and the cylinder cooling jacket 2; the valve guide may either be formed in one with the valve box 11, as shown, or as a separate component. The inlet valve box, not shown, is not liquid cooled; the inlet and exhaust valves are preferably diametrically opposed, and more than two valves may be used in each cylinder.
