Abstract

25,164. Howard, H. J. Nov. 23. Gas and like engines, valves and valve-gear for. A split ring B, arranged to slide within the cylinder so as to control admission, or exhaust or both, is operated by external rods F connected to trunnion pins E projecting through slots in the cylinder walls, and the movement of the valve overlaps the path of the piston so that the valve is efficiently lubricated. In the arrangement shown for a fourstroke-cycle engine, the valve controls the admission port D and exhaust port C, and is operated by cam mechanism so that it remains stationary in its mid-position with both ports closed during the compression stroke and seven-eighths of the working stroke. The valve may be moved in both directions by a grooved cam, or it may be moved in one direction by a cam, and in the other by a spring. The cam may be on an overhead shaft and may act upon a roller carried by a bridge-piece connecting the rods F, F. The positions of the admission and exhaust ports may be interchanged. In two-stroke-cycle engines, the valve may control admission only, terminal exhaust ports being overrun by the working piston; or the valve may control exhaust only, the admission being effected through ports uncovered by the working piston, or by means of the combined piston and inlet valve described in Specification No. 21,297, A.D. 1908. According to the Provisional Specification, the ring-valve may be formed without a port, its edges overrunning admission and exhaust ports respectively ; also there may be separate ring-valves for admission and exhaust in four-stroke-cycle engines; or there may be a single ring-valve controlling admission or exhaust only.
