Abstract

28,957. Rowing, H. W., and Riley, V. W. Dec. 19. Gas and like engines.-Relates to two- and four-stroke-cycle single and double acting internal-combustion engines which may be modified to work with steam or compressed air. Fig. 1 shows a two-stroke-cycle singleacting internal-combustion engine in which the admission of the scavenging and combustible charges is controlled by a camoperated piston valve. Combustible mixture from the inlet pipe d is admitted to the cylinder through the port b when the latter is uncovered by the downward movement of the valve g. Scavenging - charges enter at the end of the working stroke when the ports and passages b, hand f coincide. The valve-gear may be adapted for reversing by mounting a pair of cams on the crank-shaft and throwing them into operation as required. A hand-operated bell-crank may be used for lifting the valve-roller j from its operating-cam i. Fig. 2 shows a modified form of double-acting engine arranged to operate with steam or compressed air. Separate cam-operated distributing-valves g, g<1> are provided for each end of the cylinder. In the position shown in Fig. 2, steam or compressed air is about to be admitted to the bottom of the cylinder through the port b<1>, the exhaust from the upper end of the cylinder escaping through a common exhaust port c. During the returnstrokes of the piston, the remaining exhaust fluid escapes through the passages b, b<1> and the exhaust pipe e when the ports h, h<1> in the valves open communication between the respective passages f, b ; f<1>, b<1>. The engine may be reversed by duplicating the cams i, i<1> and adjusting them on the crank-shaft as required. The valve-rods are prevented from turning by square portions formed on the rods at z<4>. A four-stroke-cycle internal-combustion engine is described in which the distribution of the motive fluid, the exhaust gases, and the scavenging-charges i3 controlled by a single piston valve. In this modification, the exhaust products escape over the end of the valve, while the combustible mixture and the scavenging - charges, which are both supplied under pressure, enter the cylinder through a port in the valve. The port-opening in each of the above engines may be varied by adjusting the position of the valve liners or by altering the length of the valve-rod. By changing the cams, the engines may operate with either gas, oil, steam, or compressed air.
