453,287. Oil engines ; cylinders. BARTON, T. H., Chilwell Road, Beeston, Nottinghamshire. April 11, 1935, No. 11196. [Classes 7 (ii) and 7 (iii)] In compressionignition direct-injection oil engines comprising a valve D controlling both inlet and exhaust, the valve - stem D<1> is supported in a guide J centrally disposed in a main air inlet passage L of circular cross-section leading to the valve-controlled opening, the guide J being secured to a baffle K, which closes up that part of the passage L above the guide and leaves the part below the guide open and is shaped so as to direct the exhaust gases into the exhaust outlet. The valve D and its seat form the main portion of one side of a combustion chamber B, the other side comprising a plug E, which may be replaced by a longer or shorter plug to vary the size of the chamber. A fuel nozzle Q may be provided in the end of the combustion chamber or in the plug E. Further air inlet ports O may be carried in from each side of the cylinder head.
