Abstract

580,192. Rotary engines. WELLS, R. G. June 16, 1944, No. 11491. [Class 110 (ii)] In a rotary I.C. engine, the compressor and motor rotors 4 and 13 respectively are mounted eccentrically in their respective cylinders 2 and 3, and contact the cylinder walls as shown. Slots 6 are provided with vanes 5 which contact the cylinder walls and may be guided by slipper blocks 7 sliding in annular guideways 9. The compressor cylinder is provided with air inlet port 10 and fuel inlet port 11, the latter being connected to a carburettor 12. The compressor rotor has three vanes and the motor rotor has four vanes, the rotors being coupled by gearing 19, 20, 21 so that they rotate clockwise with a velocity ratio of 4:3. The compressed charge passes into the motor cylinder through transfer port, 15 and is ignited by sparking plug 16. Exhaust ports 17, 17<1> and 18 are provided. The port 17 may be arranged nearer the port 17<1>, e.g., at 45 degrees below the line 22, so as to increase the duration of the power stroke. Instead of using a carburettor, fuel may be injected into a mixing chamber after the air has been compressed. The inlet and exhaust ports may be controlled by mechanicallyoperated valves. Ignition may be effected by compression or by an electric glow.
