Abstract

647,452. Rotary engines. PRIDHAM, J. E. Nov. 2, 1948, No. 28428. [Class 110(ii)] An internal-combustion engine comprises a rotor 4 having two or more axially-extending pistons 7 moving around an annular working chamber 2, and at least two rotary abutments 9, one of which is shaped to form combustion chambers 9b on its outer surface. Each abutment has two slots 9a, diametrically positioned, through which a piston passes. Fuel mixture, compressed into a combustion chamber 9b, is fired by a plug 19 and the products expanded behind the piston 7. Exhaust gases are swept through an outlet 22 by the piston, and fresh air, or fuel gas, induced into the chamber through a port 21. The abutments are driven by the shaft 5 through gears 14. 15, 13 and rotate on bushes 11 mounted on spindles 8 projecting from the stator 1. The abutments may be arranged on axes inclined to the main shaft 5. Working chambers may be provided on each side of a common rotor which has pistons projecting from each face. Exhaust gases may be used for jet propulsion. A water jacket 23 is provided. Additional cooling is secured by compressed gas which is swept before a piston through an abutment after the combustion gases in the chamber 9b are cut off. No packing is provided. Sealing is obtained by gas eddies formed in unpolished working parts.
