Abstract

463,489. Rotary internal-combustion engines. PRIDHAM, J. E. Nov. 8, 1935, No. 30915. [Class 110 (ii)] A rotor C on a shaft D has one or more pistons J, J<1> on its periphery, which move in an annular ring a<3> in a casing a<2>. One or more rotary abutments F, F<1> on shafts f<2> are driven by gears f<3> to rotate in the same direction as the rotor. The abutments have recesses to allow the passage of the pistons, and are also provided each with a compression chamber L and a port which alternately connects the working chamber with an inlet or an exhaust. The engine operates on the four-stroke cycle and the compressed mixture is fired by a plug. Alternatively, the engine may operate on the Diesel principle. In Fig. 4, the piston J is inducing gas behind it, through a port L, and compressing gas before it into the compression space in the abutment F<1>. At the same time gas has been fired and is expanding behind the piston J<1> which is sweeping burnt gases before it to an exhaust port in the abutment F. The engine may be duplicated on each side of a plane passing at right angles through the shaft D.
