Abstract
578,866. Rotary valves. BRIGGS MANUFACTURING CO., and GERNANDT, W. G. Aug. 21, 1944, No. 15923. [Class 7 (vi)] A frusto-conical rotary valve 25, of the kind containing all or the greater part of the combustion space, is mounted in a correspondingly shaped seating 27 in the cylinder head 28 there being a relieved area, between a portion of the seating and the surface of the valve, of increasing depth circumferentially from points 80, 81, to points on a line 82 through the centre of the sparking plug hole 61; the depth of the relieved area increases in a direction extending from the narrow end toward the wider end of the valve, from line 79 to line 78. A freely floating frustoconical thrust bearing ring 75, of material such as bronze or lead bronze alloy, is interposed between the surface of the valve and the seating and is received in an annular recess 76 in the valve. The hub, portion 41 of the gear 39 has a circumferential groove 73 which is in permanent communication, through opening 68 in . a sleeve 67, with a passage 70 to which lubricating oil is supplied under constant pressure. A single vertical slot 74 extending downwardly from groove 73 registers once, during every revolution of the gear 39, with an opening 69 in the sleeve 67 and oil is then forced to the valve seating through a passage 71 and ducts 72.
