Abstract

442,189. Valves. HALL, C. W., 1301, South Ogden Street, Denver, Colorado, U.S.A. April 12, 1935, No. 11425. [Classes 7 (ii) and 7 (vi)] Inlet at 38 and exhaust at 33 are controlled by a rotary valve 14, which may be coaxially arranged in the cylinder head, and is pressed axially by a sealing-plate 15, the cylinder exhaust port 31 communicating with a passage 36 in the valve leading to the port 33 in the centre of the cap 20, and the cylinder inlet port communicating with the port 38 by a second passage (not shown) opening on the cylindrical wall of the valve. The port 31 is surrounded by an axially-expanding sealing-ring 32, and a similar ring 35 surrounds the upper end of the passage 36. The sealing-plate 15 may be formed with a flange 16 fitted with rings 17, and is pressed upwards by a leaf spring 41. The rings 32, 35 are composed of bevelled sections as shown. Other forms of bevelled rings are described, or the upper ring 35 may consist of two flat rings, the lower of which is of cork or other cushioning-material. The valve and the sealing plate 15 may have hollow spaces filled with cooling-salts. Lubricating.-Oil is supplied by a tube 43 to a lubricating-button 45 placed in a recess in the sealing-plate 15 and having a central opening 47 leading to radial oil grooves in the upper face of the button. A spring 46 holds the button against the valve. The oil is carried upwards around the valve by helical grooves.
