Abstract

580,611. Rotary valves. BRIGGS MANUFACTURING CO. July 7, 1944, No. 13008. Convention date, Aug. 19, 1943. [Classes 7 (ii) and 7 (vi)] Oil, under pressure, for lubricating the bearing surface above the side post 49 of a rotary valve 25 of an internal combustion engine passes through an inlet 58, and passages 57, 55, in a cylinder head 28 in which the valve rotates, through a duct 59 in the head and an oil groove 60 on the surface of the outer end of the valve to outlet ducts 65, 66 and outlet passages 61, 62. When the inlet duct 59 registers intermittently with one of the positions 60a of the oil groove 60, oil is forced through the inclined portions 60c, portions 60b and out through the outlet ducts 65, 66 which simultaneously register with two of the oil groove portions 60b at opposite sides of the valve axis. For lubricating the bearing surface below the valve port the oil is forced through a duct 67, at the lower end of the inlet passage 55, a circumferential oil groove 68, formed on the inner conical seat 27 of the cylinder head, and an outlet duct 69 communicating with the outlet passage 61. The valve is biased to its seating by a compression spring 36. The cooling chamber 41 in the valve contains any suitable cooling medium such as metallic sodium. In a modification the bearing loads are taken by floating bearing rings above and below the valve port. In a further modification the lower oil groove 68 in the cylinder head is of zig-zag construction.
