Abstract

584,829. Lubricating valves. BRIGGS MANUFACTURING CO. Jan. 26, 1945, No. 2097. Convention date, March 20, 1944. [Classes 7 (ii) and 7 (vi)] Lubricant is supplied to the surface of frustoconical rotary valve 33 through a conduit containing a plug which restricts the flow of oil to the valve and which is arranged opposite the sparking plug 37. The combustion chamber 34 is formed in the valve 33 which is mounted in the cylinder head. An annular relief 44 formed wholly in the valve or its seating or partly in both extends for the full height of the valve port ,35. Lubricating oil is supplied under pressure through passages 47, 47a, 45, 49 in the, head opposite the sparking plug 37 to a duct 50 containing a plug 51 past or through which oil is supplied to the valve 35 beneath the relief 44. The remaining oil escapes through passages 52, 54 to a reservoir 55 in the head. Oil flows through the duct 50 on the valve through the clearance between the plug 51 and the duct or through grooves in the plug. The plug 51 is held against the valve by the pressure of the lubricating oil and the'valve 33 has, a flattened portion 56 to enable the plug 51 to be reciprocated in the duct 50. A second duct 57 containing a plug 58 conveys oil to the valve surface above the relief 44. The outlet orifice 47b leading to the reservoir 55 may be smaller than the inlet orifice 47a to the passage 45 to increase the oil pressure around the plugs 51, 56. In a modified construction the duct 50 is closed or partly closed by a plug of sintered metal through which oil seeps on to the valve. Additional oil may be supplied by providing grooves in the plug. The cylinder and head are provided with' communicating water jackets 28, 25 and leakage is prevented by sealing rings 29, 29a. The lower end of the valve. housing is formed with an annular groove to receive a ring 31 of metal which causes the adjacent portion of the valve housing 30 to expand at the same rate as the rotary valve.
