Abstract

1,058,360. Pistons. SOC. D'EXPLOITATION DES MATERIELS HISPANO-SUIZA. Dec. 23, 1965 [Dec. 29, 1964], No. 54600/65. Heading F2T. A piston for an I.C. engine comprises a central body 4 which co-operates with a sliding cap 9 to define an oil chamber 12, the inlet and outlet orifices 22, 24 of which are closed by co-operating parts of the body and cap when the cap is moved towards the body under a given pressure in the cylinder. Oil is supplied to the chamber 12 through the connecting rod 7, gudgeon pin 8 and passages 41 to interconnecting grooves 23 and radial slots 22, the outlet from the chamber being through clearance space 24 and ducts 24a in a limiting stop 16. The orifices are closed when concentric bearing surfaces 18, 20 and 19, 21 come into contact. In another embodiment, Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown), the inlet orifice is closed when a groove 27 in the cap no longer registers with inlet slots 26 and the outlet orifice is closed when a shoulder 28 on the cap engages within the clearance space 24. The body 4 may be made of a light alloy, preferably one containing silicon, and the cap made of chromium steel.
