Abstract

195,692. Mitchell, E. A., and Burls, J. A. E. Dec. 6, 1921. Lift valves; closure members, interconnected valve members; leakage, discharging.-A stop valve is provided with a main closure member in the form of a lift piston h and with a second closure member in the form of a piston i with a depending flange or skirt for protecting the main closure member. The second portion is subjected to the fluid pressure on the inlet side of the valve which tends to close it, and is actuated by the first piston. The valve body a is provided with a cylindrical chamber f closed by a cover g and containing a free piston i. The piston h works in a cylindrical seating d, and the piston i closes against an annular seating e. The actuating spindle j extends through a packing p in the cover, and is moved by a screw k connected to a handle m. Packing-rings n, o are provided for the pistons and are subject to the fluid pressure through passages w. The piston i is constantly under fluid pressure admitted through a passage r. Some lost motion is provided between the pistons h and i so that the piston i is lifted after the piston h is withdrawn into the space s, and is allowed to seat first when the valve is closed. The packing may alternatively be of rectangular or L- section, or may be metallic. The Provisional Specification describes a construction in which the fluid pressure is admitted above the piston i through a passage in the spindle.
