Abstract

743,213. Valves. SIEMENS-SCHUCKERTWERKE AKT.-GES. April 15, 1953 [April 17, 1952], No. 10340/53. Class 135. A gate valve has a closure member comprising discs 2 supported by a crosshead 1 movable by a stem 7 to control flow through passages 11a, 11b. Diaphragms 3 composed of annular rings 15, 16, 17 connect the discs to the crosshead to permit movement of each disc away from the crosshead. Passages 12 through the discs connect the passages 11a, 11b to the spaces confined by the discs, diaphragms and crosshead, and these spaces may be interconnected by bores 9 controlled by auxiliary valve 8. Annular cavities 24, 21 in rings 15, 16 communicate via grooves with said spaces and the interior of valve body 6, respectively. When the stem 7 is lowered to close the valve, auxiliary valve 8 closes bores 9 and inlet pressure fluid enters the appropriate space, e.g. that fed by left-hand bore 12, cavity 24 providing an area on which the pressure is effective to urge the left-hand disc against body seat 5. To open the valve, stem 7 is raised to open bores 9 and effect a pressure balance between passages 11a, 11b and further movement of the stem raises the crosshead and discs. It is stated that when the inlet fluid has access to the body interior 6, it enters cavity 21 and compensates for the seating pressure of the left-hand disc.
