Abstract

686,362. Valve gear. DAIMLER-BENZ AKT.- GES. May 31, 1951, No. 12973/51. Class 7 (vi). Valve rockers 8 are mounted on,eccentric shafts or bearing bushes 10, Fig. 1, which are rotable to eliminate clearance by means of a piston. 16 acted upon on one side by lubricant under pressure supplied through a pipe 18 past a non-return valve 17 and on the other side by a restoring spring 19. A small amount of lubricant escapes past the piston 16 to permit return of the piston under the force of the spring 19 when the ,engine cools, and the piston 16 is preferably made of a material, e.g. a light metal or bronze alloy, of higher coefficient of thermal expansion than the cylinder, which is preferably of cast iron. in order to reduce the clearance between the piston and cylinder as the temperature increases. In Fig. 3 the rockers 8 are mounted on a shaft 30 having eccentric journals 31 and rotatably-adjusted by a piston 16 acted upon bv pressurised lubricant sumpplied through a port 18. and escaping through a port 32 controlled by a conical plug 34 having, a screwed end 35 and actuated by a bimetallic coil 38. As the temperature rises the coil 38 rotates the plug 34 to close the port 32 to compensate for the reduction in viscosity of the oil.
