Abstract

Valve gear.-To compensate for heat expansion in valve gear, the valve rocker 12 is mounted on an eccentric 20, the angular position of which is controlled by an hydraulic abutment, Fig. 3. An arm 22 on the eccentric bears against a plunger 24 working in an hydraulic chamber 32 and pressed upwards by a spring 38. When the engine becomes hot, the eccentric 20 rotates slightly and forces the plunger 24 downwards, oil passing out of the chamber 32 through passages 36 and past the clearance around the plunger. As the parts cool, the spring 38 returns the plunger, the oil returning through a passage 30 and past a valve 34. In a modification, the eccentrically-mounted rocker is arranged between the cam and tappet; or the cam shaft may be mounted in adjustable eccentric bearings. Oil may he supplied to the chamber 32 from the lubricating-pump, and the plunger may be replaced by a diaphragm. A crank device may be used instead of the eccentric.
