Abstract

433,965. Four-stroke engines ; valves. GWILLIAM, V. C. E. MARTEN-, c/o Westminster Bank, Ltd., Southsea, Hampshire. March 5, 1934, No. 6928. [Classes 7 (ii) and 7 (vi)] A rotary valve h is arranged between the combustion heads of one or more pairs of opposed cylinders, so as to serve the two cylinders of a pair simultaneously, and so as to be balanced between diametrically opposite compression and explosion pressures. The valve is shown with four recesses 4 which connect the cylinder ports 1 to inlet ports 2 and exhaust ports 3, the ports 2, 3 leading to passages C, D respectively. Between the recesses 4 the valve is fitted with insulated electrodes, between the heads of which and the edge of the cylinder ports the igniting sparks occur ; or the sparks may take place within the valve electrode pockets. The valve is driven by worm gearing from a cross shaft connecting the two crank shafts ; and the worm may be axially adjustable for altering the timing or reversing. The valve may be built up of sections connected together by a central bolt, the end sections being formed with vanes for forcing cooling-water through the valve. Power may be taken off both crank shafts, or from the cross shaft. The valve may be of phosphor bronze.
