Abstract
210,718. Newton, E. R. Feb. 3, 1923, [Convention date]. Motor power plant.-In a power plant comprising a reciprocating internal-combustion engine 10 and a secondary expansion apparatus such as a turbine 11 or hot air engine to which the exhaust gases pass, means are provided for charging the cylinders with pre-compressed air and for scavenging the residual exhaust gas with precompressed air at a pressure substantially higher than that of the charging air. A multi stage air compressor 15 driven by the engine 10 or turbine 11 supplies a.ir from the low pressure stage 18 for charging the cylinders and from the high pressure stage 17 for scavenging the residual exhaust gases : the scavenging air is at about the same pressure as the exhaust gases from the engine 10. The inlet to the cylinder is not opened till the scavenging air retained in the cylinder at the closure of the exhaust valve has expanded to the pressure of the charging air. Each cylinder may exhaust to a separate nozzle or group of nozzles. The internal-combustion engine may expend all its power on the compressor, the turbine alone supplying power. Specification 159,184 is referred to.
