Abstract

133,232. Stokes, C. L. Jan. 11, 1919. Valves; regulating. -In a sleeve-valve engine, belts of ports are provided so that scavenging - air or charge may be admitted at both ends of a cylinder having central exhaust ports, or at the middle of a cylinder having exhaust ports at both ends. As shown in Fig. 3, scavenging-air is admitted at 27 and 28, and the exhaust ports are at 26. The admission and exhaust belts 27, 2P and 26 in the cylinder are widened towards the pipe connexions as shown. The fuel injector comprises a fluted plunger 37,'Fig. 5, a fluted automatic valve 91 seated at 94 and at the jet, and a check valve 86. The plunger is moved downwards by an arm 35 on the sleeve valve and is returned by the spring 80, its stroke being regulated by a stop 102 on the spindle of the air throttle 22. The invention is applicable to two-, four-, or six-stroke-cycle engines, and the sleeve valve may be worked by an eccentric, by a cam 16 and spring 47, or by a box cam. In the twostroke-cycle engine shown in Fig. 3, the scavenging and charging air is compressed in the crank chamber. The sleeve valve has an annular head 48 and moves downwards towards the end of the working stroke, and assists compression in the crank chamber; but this annular head 48 may be dispensed with. In a modification, the sleeve valve is worked by an eccentric on the crankshaft, set opposite to the crank, thus providing a balanced engine, and the pumping space is then formed bv an annular chamber above the annular head of the sleeve valve.
