Abstract

Cylinders receiving liquid fuel.-In an engine having means for imparting rotary or helical motion to the air entering the cylinder, the combustion chamber is located between two opposing concave walls s, r formed one on the piston and the other on the cylinder head and exhaust valve b. The piston and cylinder head are conical at e, and towards the end of the compression stroke the air, rotating approximately about the cylinder axis, is forced into the combustion chamber 9 with a motion approximating to that of a vortex ring. The helical or rotary motion is imparted to the air by tangentially and upwardly directed terminal inlet parts. The fuel is injected at c in the form of a sheet lying either, as shown, in the plane of the cylinder axis, or in a plane inclined thereto. The fuel nozzle, Fig. 7, comprises a flat edge x on to which a knife edge y is pressed, the two edges being forced apart by the pressure of the fuel during injection. The members formed with the coacting knife and flat edges may be constructed in one piece. In another modification, Fig. 8, a tubular member l with a knife edge is sealed by a flat member m formed on the end of a spindle n passing through the tube. Specification 157,428 is referred to.
