309,297. Ricardo, H. R. Oct. 18, 1927. Cylinders, combustion chambers of, baffles for guiding charge and arrangement of igniters in. -In a combustion chamber F, which overlaps the cylinder bcre and is arranged to produce turbulence as described in Specification 148,046, the sparking plug is located at J in the part of the head closely approached by the piston. The clearance between this part and the piston face should not exceed 4 per cent of the stroke and the amount of charge entrapped should not exceed 10 per cent of the whole charge. If this clearance approaches a minimum of 0.02 inches, a recess F<2> may be formed, either in the head or the piston, adjacent the sparking plug, or a sparking plug having an appreciable gas capacity may be employed. An example is given in which if this capacity is 1 cc., the clearance 0.022 inch, the cylinder bore 4 inches and the compression ratio 5 : 1 then good firing will take place with a 20 per cent weak mixture.
