Abstract

609,261. Combustion chambers. SANDERS, A. F. March 9, 1946, No. 7412. [Class 7 (iii)] A fuel-injection engine is of the kind having a piston with a convex top 17, an injection cavity 20 in the cylinder head, and a reception cavity 21 through which the injection cavity communicates with the cylinder bore, the two cavities being connected by a sharp-edged ductless opening 31 and is characterised in that the cavities lie between a continuation of the internal wall of the cylinder and the axis of the latter, and that the reception cavity is formed as a wedge-section recess in the concave wall 18 of the cylinder head so as to be of less volume than the injection cavity. The ductless opening 31 has 'a cross-sectional area which is less than the maximum area, in a parallel plane, of the injection cavity. The injection cavity is generally part-spherical in which case the opening 31 is circular. Fig. 3, however, shows a modified cavity 20 which has a D-shaped opening. Fig. 7 shows an arrangement having two of each cavity. Specifications 440,046, 514,380, 531,075 and 556,000 are referred to.
