Abstract
1450800 Cylinder ports SULZER BROS Ltd 28 Sept 1973 [28 Sept 1972] 45490/73 Heading F1B A two-stroke I.C. engine with reverse scavenging has a port system for the or each cylinder which comprises a row of exhaust ports 4, 6 extending in the circumferential direction of the cylinder and a row of scavenging ports 5, 8 also extending circumferentially, each of the two rows extending only partly round the cylinder and being symmetrical about a common axial line, each of the ports extending in a plane which is substantially normal to the piston axis, the row of exhaust ports lying closer to the cylinder head than the row of scavenging ports, the row of scavenging ports being divided into three groups, a first group (main scavenging ports 5) lying between the other two groups (auxiliary scavenging ports 8), the latter 8 having smaller axial dimensions than the former 5, the row of exhaust ports being divided into three groups, a first group (auxiliary exhaust ports 6) lying between the other two groups (main exhaust ports 4) which have a greater axial dimension than the auxiliary exhaust ports and each group of main exhaust ports being located adjacent one of the transitions between the main and auxiliary scavenging ports. The exhaust ports lead into a duct 7 and the angle subtended at the cylinder axis by the complete group of exhaust ports is 170 to 180 degrees. The auxiliary exhaust ports 6 and the two main exhaust ports 4 which are nearer to the axis of symmetry of the exhaust ports, are radial relative to the cylinder axis and the axis of the two outer main exhaust ports are each parallel to the adjacent port. The main scavenging ports are disposed around a sector of 120 to 130 degrees and the main and auxiliary ports together are disposed around a sector of 260 to 270 degrees. The total crosssectional area of all the exhaust ports is one-half of the total area of all the scavenging ports. The area of the main scavenging ports is 0À65 to 0À7 of the total area of all the scavenging ports. The lower edges of the scavenging ports 5 and 8 are level with the control edge of the piston at B.D.C. The distance "B" is 27% of the piston stroke, the distance "C" is one to two per cent of the stroke and the distance "D" between any vertically aligned pair of ports is 6% of the stroke.
