Abstract
602,662. Two-stroke engines. PENWARDEN, H., and KINGCOME, J. Nov. 8, 1945, No. 29769. Drawings to Specification. [Class 7 (ii)] A two-stroke opposed-piston engine comprises one or more sets of triple cylinders the axes of which lie on the sides of an isoceles triangle having the angle between the equal sides greater than 60 degrees and not more than 90 degrees. The crank-shafts are arranged at the angles of the triangle those at the base revolving in an opposite direction to that at the apex. A diagram is given showing the efficiency for various vertical angles and indicating that for maximum efficiency the angle should be 75 degrees corresponding to an exhaust lead of 10 degrees. An engine having 24 cylinders may be built up of 8 triplecylinder sets.
