Engines with different compression ratios are formed from identical blocks and cylinder heads by forming the valve seats 16 at the base of recesses 9 in the planer surface of the cylinder head,whereby the head can be used as initially formed to provide one compression ratio or the material 13 around the valve seats can be ground away to provide a different compression ratio.
