Class 7(2) Piston pumps 10 directly driven from the cranks of certain only, e.g. alternate ones of, individual two-stroke engine cylinders 1, deliver scavenging air to interconnected air belts 2 in parallel with air delivered from an exhaust gas turbo-charger 5, 6 via a cooler 7. Each pump 10 may be single- or double-acting and has a low compression ratio so as to pas slittle air at normal engine loads, though it delivers nearly its whole stroke volume at reduced engine loads when the turbo-charger air delivery pressure is low.
