Abstract
522,001. Two-stroke cycle engines. RICARDO, H. R. Nov. 2, 1938, No. 31713. [Classes 7 (ii) and 7 (vi)] Terminal scavenging ports E are supplied from a reciprocating pump H driven from, but out-of-phase with, the crankshaft. The pump delivery stroke commences at or about, but preferably slightly before, the commencement of the scavenging period and ends after the scavenging ports have been closed. Transfer through the passage G is controlled by a rotary or slide valve M, which closes the passage at the end of the pump delivery stroke, thus trapping air pressure in the scavenging belt. The valve M also controls the inlet of air to the pump cylinder, and the pump piston is axially guided by a fixed rod O<2>. The valve M is driven from a crank-pin R<1> engaged by one arm S of a cruciform link driven by an eccentric K<1> on the engine crank-shaft. The link also has an arm S<1> for driving a dynamo and other auxiliaries, and arms S<2>, S<3> for driving the valve cam-shaft and oil-pump respectively. The crank-pin R<1> also drives a water-circulating pump.
