Abstract

615,217. Driving blowers; elastic-fluid turbines. AKT.-GES. BROWN, BOVERI, & CIE. Nov. 16, 1945, No. 30771. Convention date, May 15. [Classes 110 (i) and 110 (iii)] [Also in Group XXVII] A gas-burning engine which drives a blower for combustible gas uses as fuel, gas escaping through a stuffing-box of the blower. As shown, Fig. 1, a blower 3 for delivering combustible gas is driven by an internal combustion engine 7. A blower 8 may either be directly driven or driven by exhaust from the engine. The blower 8 supplies air to a mixing valve 10 which is also supplied with combustible gas from a tapping 5 of a stuffing-box 4 of the blower the gas and air passing to the engine by a pipe 12. If desired, compressed air from the blower 8 may be supplied to a sealing channel 6 adjacent the stuffing-box. If the engine is to operate without supercharging a separate blower may supply compressed air to the sealing channel. If the supply of gas from the stuffing-box 4 is insufficient to run the engine additional gas can be supplied from the suction side of the blower 3 by a pipe 14 and reducing valve 15 to the mixing valve 10. In an alternative, Fig. 2, the blower 3 is driven by a gas-turbine plant comprising a gas turbine 21, blower 16, heat exchanger 18 and combustion chamber 19. Compressed air from the blower 16 is supplied to the sealing channel 6 and gas from the gland of the blower 3 is supplied to the combustion chamber 19. If the gas from the gland is insufficient to run the plant additional gas may be supplied from the inlet side of the blower 3 through a reducing valve 15. In a modification of Fig. 2, an additional turbine on the same shaft as the turbine 21 is provided and this is driven by expansion of the gas from the inlet to the blower 3 the gas being preheated by the exhaust from the turbine 21 and after expansion in this turbine the gas is supplied to the combustion chamber. In another modification the suction side of the blower 16 is connected to the channel 6 so that it draws gas from this channel and air from the outer part of the stuffing-box towards the sealing channel.
