Abstract

851,317. Charge pumps. GOTAVERKEN A. B. July 2, 1958 [July 25, 1957], No. 21222/58. Class 7(2). In a marine two-stroke engine, at starting or low loads a scavenge-air blower 4 driven by an engine exhaust gas turbine 2 is assisted by a blower 8 separately driven as by an electric motor and delivering to the intake 5 of the blower 4 downstream of a closed valve 15. The intake 5 may draw in its air through a filter 6 located outside the engine room, and as shown supplies via a valve 11 the blower 8, whose delivery is at normal engine load diverted by valves 14, 12 to a duct 9 supplying air for engine-room cooling and ventilation, the valve 15 being then opened. The turbine exhaust 3 may serve a waste heat boiler. Automatically-operated or spring-loaded valves may replace hand-operated valves 15 and 12 or 14. The blower 8 may have an independent intake, and may be remote from the intake 5. The valve 11 is shut only to isolate the blower 8 e.g. for overhauling thereof.
