Abstract

1,068,941. Charging engine cylinders. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Nov. 1, 1963 [Aug. 2, 1962], No. 29757/62. Heading F1B. An exhaust driven turbo-charger 12, 14, is designed in that the permitted maximum cylinder pressure is reached at a predetermined part load, the air supply to the engine being reduced by governor operated means at loads above said load to avoid exceeding the permitted maximum cylinder pressure. In Fig. 1 the delivery of air from the blower 14 is controlled by a valve (30) Fig. 2 (not shown) actuated from a governor shaft 18. Lever (31) is free on the shaft 18 and at a predetermined load a lever (34) fixed on shaft 18 contacts lever (31) to move valve (30) towards closing as engine load increases. The governor may alternatively control a throttle valve in the supercharger inlet or a blow-off valve in the supercharger outlet or turbine inlet.
