Abstract
1,062,983. Regulating and charging I. C. engines. PERKINS ENGINES Ltd. Dec. 5, 1963 [Dec. 21, 1962], No.48346/62. Heading F1B. An I. C. engine pressure charging system comprises at least first and second turbine/compressor units 7, 8 and 4, 14 arranged so that exhaust gas passes through the turbine 8 to valve 11 so that variable quantities may be passed to the turbine 14. A first stage compressor 4 draws in air through an inlet filter 5 and passes it to second stage compressor 7 through duct 6, compressed air then being delivered to inlet manifold 2. Gases from the exhaust manifold 3 drive turbine 8 which in turn drives compressor 7 through a shaft 9. Exhaust gas flowing through duct 10 is apportioned by valve 11 into ducts 12 and 13A. In other embodiments the positions of the first and second stage compressors are reversed, the first stage compressor may be partially by-passed by a valve control and the second stage compressor may be partially or completely by-passed by the valve controls situated in a by-pass duct and in the second stage compressor inlet and outlet ducts. The control valves may be actuated conjointly with the engine throttle or in response to speed or pressure signals. Operation. Valve 11 is kept fully open to turbine 14 until 40% of maximum power is attained and is thereafter progressively closed to turbine 14 until maximum speed is reached. This gives a substantially constant H. P. delivery in the speed range between peak torque and maximum engine speed.
