Classes 7(2) and 7(6) In a two-stroke multicylinder spark ignition engine, scavenging air is supplied from a centrifugal compressor 13, Fig. 1, to conducits 10a, 10b, associated with a pair of cylinders and controlled by separate butterfly valves 16a, 16b connected to a bypass valve 16c for the compressor which is opened to reduce the effective delivery thereof as the valves 16a, 16b are closed. In a modification, Fig. 2, the valves 16a, 16b are replaced by butterfly valves situated in the individual intake manifold branches.
