Abstract

7563. Ganz & Co. July 22, A.D. 1903, [date applied for under Patents Act, A.D. 1901]. Gas or explosive-vapour engines.-A pair of cylinders 1, 2 work on a four-stroke cycle and are arranged in tandem or side by side as shown in Fig. 1, similar strokes taking place in the separate cylinders simultaneously. On the outstrokes a charge of air is drawn into the cylinder 1 through the valve 5 and a moistened charge into the cylinder 2 through the valves 6, 7, 8. The charge in the cylinder 2 is fired in any convenient way, the products of combustion passing through the passage 3 and igniting the charge in the cylinder 1, the fuel for which is carried in from the chamber 11 by the combustion-products. A common exhaust valve 18 is provided. If the same degree of compression is used in both cylinders, the valve 4 may be dispensed with. Fig. 2 shows the device for supplying liquid fuel to the cylinder 1. The fuel is supplied past the non-return valve 10 to the chamber 11, and leave by the outlet shown when combustion-products enter the passage 12. Governing is effected by inserting a governor-controlled needle valve in the fuelsupply passage leading to the non-return valve. Modifications are described in which the cylinders are arranged at right-angles, and in which both cylinders work on a two-stroke cycle. If preferred, one igniting or smaller cylinder may be used for two or more main cylinders.
