Abstract
313,024. Hooker, W. S. March 2, 1928. No Patent granted (Sealing fee not paid). Combustion product engines. - In a multicylinder engine, air is supplied by a blower built into the flywheel, to a passage 14 in each cylinder in permanent connection with the corresponding crank case; at the end of the power stroke a terminal exhaust port 33 is opened and the cylinder scavenged. The air trapped in the cylinder after closure of the air-admission and exhaust ports is compressed and delivered past a non-return valve 17 to a combustion chamber 22 common to all the cylinders. Fuel burns continuously in this chamber, which may be water-jacketted or lagged internally or externally. The combustion products are supplied to the cylinders through a manifold, admission to the cylinder being controlled by valves 27, and a non-return valve 23 is placed at the outlet of the combustion chamber. The liquid fuel is supplied past a handadjustable control valve, the central part 41 of which serves to stop the supply of fuel and the lower part has a drainage passage 43. The fuel in the supply tank may be put under pressure by a connection from the air supply to the combustion chamber. At starting, petrol may be supplied to a recess 46 in the admission pipe to the chamber 22; a sparking plug is also provided therein. If desired, water may be injected into the chamber and, to assist in the scavenging at the end of the out-stroke, a small hole may be made in each valve 17 to allow the return of part of the gases in the pipe to the combustion chamber. In a modification, the cylinders have a common head on which are mounted the delivery valves 17, the combustion chamber, the products-supply manifold, and rotary admission valves to the cylinders.
