Claims (37)
- 長手方向に離間された排気ポートおよび吸気ポートを有する少なくとも1つのシリンダと、前記シリンダのボア内に互いに向かい合って配置される一対のピストンとを含む内燃機関用の燃焼室構造であって、前記ピストンの対向する端面の周辺領域の間に画定されるスキッシュ・ゾーンと、前記端面の間に画定される細長いキャビティと、前記スキッシュ・ゾーンを通して前記キャビティの中に延在する少なくとも1つの噴射ポートとを含む、燃焼室構造。
- 前記キャビティが、第1の端面のボウルと第2の端面の平坦面との間に画定される、請求項1に記載の燃焼室構造。
- 前記ボウルが、クラム・シェル形状を有する、請求項2に記載の燃焼室構造。
- 前記キャビティが、第1の端面のボウルと第2の端面のボウルとの間に画定される、請求項1に記載の燃焼室構造。
- 各ピストンの前記ボウルが、前記ピストンの内部向かって前記端面から内方へ湾曲する第1の部分と、前記端面から外に向かって突出する第2の部分とを有する凹面を画定するボウルである、請求項4に記載の燃焼室構造。
- 前記キャビティが、概ね細長い楕円形状を有する、請求項5に記載の燃焼室構造。
- 前記少なくとも1つの噴射ポートが、スキッシュ・ゾーンを通して概ね半径方向に延在する、請求項1に記載の燃焼室構造。
- 長手方向に離間された排気ポートおよび吸気ポートを有する少なくとも1つのシリンダと、前記シリンダのボア内に互いに向かい合って配置される一対のピストンとを含む内燃機関であって、燃焼室が、前記ピストンの対向する端面の間に画定され、前記ピストンのうちの少なくとも1つの端面が、前記端面の周縁部を画定する円周方向領域と周縁部内のボウルとを有し、前記ボウルが、前記円周方向接触領域を含む平面から前記ピストンの内部に向かって内方へ湾曲する第1の部分と、前記ピストンの内部から前記円周方向接触領域を含む平面を通って外に向かって湾曲する第2の部分とを有する凹面を画定する、内燃機関。
- 各ボウルが、概ね半楕円形状を有する、請求項8に記載の内燃機関。
- 前記対向するピストンは、前記ピストンが前記ボア内でそれぞれの上死点(TDC)位置の近くにある場合に、細長い楕円形状を有する燃焼室が前記ボウルの間に画定されように、前記ボア内に方向付けられる、請求項8に記載の内燃機関。
- 少なくとも1つの噴射器ポートが、前記燃焼室の長軸上の位置において前記シリンダに設けられる、請求項10に記載の内燃機関。
- 前記対向するピストンは、前記各ピストンがそれぞれの上死点(TDC)位置の近くにある場合に細長いテーパ状のシリンダの形状を有する燃焼室がボウルの間に画定され、かつ少なくとも1つの噴射ポートが前記燃焼室の長軸を横断する線上で前記シリンダに設けられるように、前記ボア内に方向付けられる、請求項8に記載の内燃機関。
- 前記噴射器ポートが、前記燃焼室の長軸に対して概ね垂直な線上で前記シリンダに設けられる、請求項12に記載の内燃機関。
- 各端面が、前記周縁部内に、前記円周方向接触領域を含む前記平面から外に向かって湾曲する、凸面をさらに含み、前記凸面が、リッジを形成するように前記凹面の第2の部分に出会う、請求項8に記載の内燃機関。
- 前記対向するピストンは、前記各ピストンが前記ボア内でそれぞれの上死点(TDC)位置の近くにある場合に各ピストンの端面の凸面が、他のピストンの凹面の第2の部分でスキッシュ・ゾーンを画定するように、前記ボア内に方向付けられる、請求項14に記載の内燃機関。
- 前記ピストンが前記ボア内でそれぞれの上死点(TDC)位置の近くにある場合に、各スキッシュ・ゾーンの対向する凹面部分および凸面部分が、前記ボウルの間で画定されるキャビティに向かってスキッシュ流を生じる、請求項15に記載の内燃機関。
- 少なくとも1つの噴射器ポートが、前記キャビティの長軸上の位置において前記シリンダに設けられる、請求項16に記載の内燃機関。
- 少なくとも1つの噴射器ポートが、前記キャビティの長手方向軸線を横断する線上で前記シリンダに設けられる、請求項16に記載の内燃機関。
- 前記噴射器ポートが、前記キャビティの長手方向軸線に対して概ね垂直な線上で前記シリンダに設けられる、請求項18に記載の内燃機関。
- 対向するピストンの端面で燃焼室を画定するための端面を有するピストンであって、前記端面が、前記端面の周縁部および前記周縁部内のボウルを画定するように、前記ピストンの長手方向軸線上で心出しされる円周方向領域を有し、前記ボウルが、前記円周方向接触領域を含む平面から前記ピストンの内部に向かって内方へ湾曲する第1の部分と、前記ピストンの内部から前記平面を通して外に向かって湾曲する第2の部分とで凹面を画定する、ピストン。
- 前記端面が、前記周縁部内に、前記円周方向接触領域を含む平面から外に向かって湾曲する、凸面をさらに含み、前記凸面が、リッジを形成するように前記凹面の前記第2の部分に出会う、請求項20に記載のピストン。
- 前記ボウルが、半楕円形状を有する、請求項20に記載のピストン。

- 長手方向に離間された排気ポートおよび吸気ポートを有する少なくとも1つのシリンダと、前記シリンダのボア内に互いに向かい合って配置される一対のピストンとを含む内燃機関を運転する方法であって、前記ピストンが前記ボア内でそれぞれの下死点位置から移動するにつれて前記吸気ポートを通して前記ボアの中に空気を導入することと、前記ピストンが前記ボア内でそれぞれの上死点位置に向かって移動すると、前記ピストンの対向する端面の間で空気の充填時にタンブリング運動を引き起こすことと、燃焼室の中に燃料のチャージを噴射することとによって、運転する方法。
- 細長い楕円形状を有する燃焼室を画定するように、共に向き合った前記ピストンの端面上の前記対向するボウルを移動させることを含む、請求項26に記載の方法。

- 前記燃焼室の中に燃料のチャージを噴射することが、前記長軸に沿って前記燃料を噴射することを含む、請求項34に記載の方法。
- 少なくとも1つのタンブリング運動を発生させることが、長軸の周りに第1のタンブリング運動を発生させることと、前記長軸に直交する軸の周りに第2のタンブリング運動を発生させることとを含む、請求項34に記載の方法。
- 前記燃焼室の中に燃料のチャージを噴射することが、前記長軸に沿って燃料の対向する噴霧を噴射することを含む、請求項34に記載の方法。
