Description

(a)軸方向の大きさおよび放射状の大きさを有する容積をロッドのセット間に規定し、
(b)前記容積内に制動ガスを供給し、
(c)問題のイオンを前記容積の中に注入するかあるいは前記容積内に形成し、
(d)前記容積内の問題の質量範囲にイオンを含むように前記ロッドに電位を印加し、
(e)前記ロッドの長さの少なくとも一部に沿って縦方向に軸電界を確立し、かつ前記容積内に含まれるイオンを分離するように前記電界を振動させ、
(f)検出するために問題のイオンを前記容積から排出し、
(g)分析するために排出されたイオンの少なくともいくつかを検出することを含む、サンプルを質量分析する方法を提供する。
ロッド62Aとロッド62Bとの間に1ボルト差を印加することによって軸電界が形成された場合、この差は、センチメートル当たり0.578/15=0.038ボルト(15センチメートルの長さのロッドに対して)であるように計算される、前述のような軸電界を形成する。図12のプロット86によって示されるように、この軸電界は、10ms未満の時間にロッドセットQ2からの大部分のイオンを除去するのに十分である。
次に、この装置は、2つのイオン間、すなわち、低質量イオン(m/z40)と高質量イオン(m/z609)との間の“ホップをピークにする”ために使用された。
ロッドセットの長さの一部に沿って軸電界を印加するだけで十分な場合がある。例えば、ロッドセットに入るイオンは、通常、比較的速く移動し、ロッドセットの長さの最後の半分に沿ってのみ減速するので、ロッドセットを通過するイオンの速度を速めることが目的であるような用途では、ロッドセットの長さの最後の半分あるいは最後の部分に沿ってのみ軸電界を印加するだけで十分なこともある。しかしながら、セグメント化ロッドあるいはセグメント化ケースあるいはポストを使用する場合は、ロッドセットが極端に短くない限り(せいぜい1インチあるいは2インチ)、2つのセグメントしか備えないとロッドセットの長さの十分な部分に沿って延びる電界が生じないので、通常3つ以上のセグメントを設ける。少なくとも3つのセグメントがあり、一般に3つ以上のセグメントがあるのが好ましい。

補助ロッド232は傾斜されているので、補助ロッドは、ロッド230の一方の端部240のロッドセット230の中心軸236よりももう一方の端部238のロッドセット230の中心軸236により近い。補助ロッドは端部240の軸よりも端部238の軸により近いので、端部238の電位は他方の端部240の電位よりも補助ロッドの電位によってより大きく影響を及ぼされる。図36に示されるように結果として、補助ロッドはまっすぐであるので、一方の端から他方の端まで均一に変わる軸電位242となる。補助ロッド232が曲げられるならば、この電位は非線形で変化するように形成することができる。

Claims (10)
- (a) ロッドのセットであって、そのセットのロッド間に、長さ方向の軸を有する空間を画定するロッドのセットと、
(b) 前記ロッドにRF電圧を印加し、前記長さ方向の軸に沿って前記空間を通ってイオンを伝達する手段と、
(c) 前記ロッドに沿って延び、前記長さ方向の軸に沿って延びる軸電界を形成する手段とを有する分析計であって、
前記ロッドが四重極ロッドセットを形成し、
前記四重極ロッドセットのうちの対向する一対のロッドにおいて、一方の端部が、他方の端部より、該四重極の中心軸により近く位置し、前記四重極ロッドセットのうちの対向するもう一対のロッドにおいて、前記一対のロッドの前記他方の端部と同じ側にある端部が、その反対側にある端部より、該四重極の中心軸により近く位置するよう構成されており、前記四重極ロッドセットの前記一方の端部において、前記一対のロッドの間隔は前記もう一対のロッドの間隔よりも狭いものであり、前記ロッドセットの前記他方の端部において、前記一対のロッドの間隔は前記もう一対のロッドの間隔よりも広いものであり、前記一対のロッドと前記もう一対のロッドとの間に電位差を供給することを特徴とする分析計。 - 前記一対のロッドおよび前記もう一対のロッドは共に略直線形状であることを特徴とする請求項1記載の分析計。
- 前記軸電界がDC電界であることを特徴とする請求項1または2記載の分析計。
- 前記空間内に衝突ガスを含み、前記空間内のイオンの衝突冷却あるいは粉砕を生じさせることを特徴とする請求項1から3いずれか1項記載の分析計。
- 前記ロッドセットに接続され、かつ該ロッドセットからイオンを受け取るように構成された分析分光計を含むことを特徴とする請求項1から4いずれか1項記載の分析計。
- 前記分析分光計が飛行時間分析計であることを特徴とする請求項5記載の分析計。
- 前記飛行時間分析計が、前記ロッドに接続され、前記長さ方向の軸に垂直な方向で該ロッドからイオンを受け取る飛行時間ドリフトチューブを有することを特徴とする請求項6記載の分析計。
- 前記空間内にドリフトガスを含み、かつ前記軸電界が、イオンの形状、質量および電荷に依存する速度でイオンを軸方向に伝達するためにドリフト速度をイオンに印加することを特徴とする請求項1から7いずれか1項記載の分析計。
- 前記ロッドセットが入口端部および出口端部を有し、前記イオンを前記入口端部と出口端部との間の前記ロッドセットの一部を通って軸方向に移動する時よりも前記ロッドセットに入る時に軸方向に速く移動させる手段を含むことを特徴とする請求項1から8いずれか1項記載の分析計。
- 前記イオンを前記ロッドセットの一部を通って軸方向に移動する時よりも前記ロッドセットを出る時に軸方向に速く移動させる手段をさらに含むことを特徴とする請求項9記載の分析計。
