ここで、主として電流駆動方式の課題について説明し、この課題を解決したプリチャージ電圧印加に係る発明の構成について説明する。なお、書込み不足の問題は、電流駆動のみではなく、電圧駆動でも発生する場合がある。したがって、本発明は、電圧駆動にも適用することができる。図1でも説明したが、図64の各画素16の発光素子15を表示させるには、1水平走査期間(1H)内でゲート信号線17aによりトランジスタ11bおよび11cを導通状態とする。次に、アノード電圧Vddよりトランジスタ11aおよびソース信号線18を介してソースドライバ14に電流Iw(プログラム電流Iw)を引き込ませる。この時の電流量の大小により階調表示を行う。コンデンサ19にはトランジスタ11aのドレイン電流に対応するゲート電圧が蓄積される。
この選択プリチャージを64階調表示行う場合(階調0を黒、階調63を白とする)で例示して説明する。たとえば、第1の選択プリチャージモードでは、0階調のみプリチャージ電圧をソース信号線18に印加する。階調0のときにのみ1水平走査期間のうちの1〜3μ秒だけ電圧発生部631のプリチャージ電圧を18に出力できるように電圧出力制御部632の制御方法を決めればよい。また、第2の選択プリチャージモードでは、0−3階調のみプリチャージ電圧をソース信号線18に印加する。階調データが階調0−3のときにのみ1水平走査期間のうちの1〜3μ秒だけ電圧発生部631のプリチャージ電圧を18に出力できるように電圧出力制御部632の制御方法を決めればよい。これらの選択プリチャージモード、全プリチャージは、あらかじめコマンドで変更できるようにしておく。また、プリチャージ印加時間、プリチャージ電圧もコマンドで変更できるようにしておくことが好ましい。これらは、コマンドデコーダ回路、電子ボリウムなどを構成することにより容易に実現できる。
[電子表示機器に関する発明の実施の形態]
つぎに、本発明の駆動方式を実施する本発明の表示機器についての実施例について説明をする。図57は情報端末装置の一例としての携帯電話の平面図である。筐体573にアンテナ571、テンキー572などが取り付けられている。572などが表示色切換キーあるいは電源オンオフ、フレームレート切り替えキーである。

Claims (11)
- 互いに交差するように配列された複数のゲート信号線及び複数のソース信号線、並びに前記ゲート信号線と前記ソース信号線の交点に対応してEL素子が形成された画素を有する表示画面と、
前記画素ごとに形成され、前記EL素子に第2の電流を供給する駆動用トランジスタと、
前記ソース信号線に接続され、前記ソース信号線を介して前記画素に印加する第1の電流を発生する電流発生回路と、
前記ソース信号線を介して前記画素に印加する電圧を発生するための電圧発生回路と、
前記電圧の前記ソース信号線への印加を制御する電圧出力制御部を具備し、
前記電圧発生回路は、水平走査期間のはじめに、前記ソース信号線に電圧を印加し、
前記電圧出力制御部は表示色に応じて、前記ソース信号線への電圧の印加を制御し、
前記電圧出力制御部は、
表示色がRの時は前記電圧を前記信号線に印加し、
表示色がG、Bの時は前記電圧を前記信号線に印加しないか、または、0階調の時のみ前記電圧を前記信号線に印加することを特徴とするEL表示装置。 - 前記第1の電流が流れる経路に形成された第1のスイッチ用トランジスタと、
前記第2の電流が流れる経路に形成された第2のスイッチ用トランジスタを更に具備し、
前記第1のスイッチ用トランジスタと前記第2のスイッチ用トランジスタとは独立してオン、オフ制御できることを特徴とする請求項1記載のEL表示装置。 - 前記表示画面に帯状の非表示領域および表示領域を発生し、
前記非表示領域および表示領域を前記表示画面の上下方向に移動させることを特徴とする請求項1記載のEL表示装置。 - 前記表示画面に帯状の非表示領域および表示領域を発生でき、
前記表示画像の非表示領域または表示領域の割合を変化させることにより前記表示画面の明るさを可変することを特徴とする請求項1記載のEL表示装置。 - 前記第2の電流が流れる経路に形成された第2のスイッチ用トランジスタを更に具備し、
前記第2のスイッチ用トランジスタを、オンオフさせることにより、前記表示画面に帯状の非表示領域および表示領域を発生させることを特徴とする請求項1記載のEL表示装置。 - 前記電流発生回路には、各出力段に複数の単位トランジスタからなるトランジスタ群が形成され、
前記トランジスタ群において、選択する単位トランジスタが出力する電流和により、前記第1の電流を生成することを特徴とする請求項1記載のEL表示装置。 - 前記電流発生回路には、各出力段に複数の単位トランジスタからなるトランジスタ群が形成され、
前記単位トランジスタが出力する電流の大きさを可変できることを特徴とする請求項1記載のEL表示装置。 - 前記第1の電流は、表示階調に応じた電流であることを特徴とする請求項1記載のEL表示装置。
- 前記電流発生回路は、前記水平走査期間の所定期間に、前記ソース信号線に電流を印加することを特徴とする請求項1記載のEL表示装置。
- 前記表示画面以外において、発光しないか、もしくは発光状態が視覚的に見えないように構成されているダミー画素行が形成されていることを特徴とする請求項1記載のEL表示装置。
- 前記EL素子の1端子に、逆バイアス電圧を印加する第3のスイッチ用トランジスタを更に備えることを特徴とする請求項1記載のEL表示装置。
