Abstract
【解決手段】互いに対向する第1の基板及び第2の基板と、第1の基板上に設けられた発光素子と、発光素子の外周を囲むように設けられた第1の封止材と、第1の封止材の外周を囲むように設けられた第2の封止材と、を有し、発光素子は、一対の電極間に発光性の有機化合物を含む層を有し、第1の封止材又は第2の封止材の一方がガラス層であり、第1の封止材又は第2の封止材の他方が樹脂層であり、第1の封止材、第2の封止材、第1の基板及び第2の基板に囲まれた第1の空間内又は樹脂層内に、乾燥剤を含み、第1の封止材、第1の基板及び第2の基板に囲まれた第2の空間内に、発光素子を備える発光装置を提供する。

Description
本実施の形態では、本発明の一態様の発光装置について図1及び図2を用いて説明する。
(構成例1)
図1(A)に、本発明の一態様の発光装置の平面図を示す。さらに、図1(A)には、該平面図における一点鎖線A−B間の断面図を示す。
図1(B)に、本発明の一態様の発光装置の平面図を示す。さらに、図1(B)には、該平面図における一点鎖線A−B間の断面図を示す。
図2(A)に、本発明の一態様の発光装置の断面図を示す。
図2(B)に、本発明の一態様の発光装置の断面図を示す。
以下に本発明の一態様の発光装置に用いることができる材料の一例を記す。
第1の基板801や第2の基板806としては、ガラス、石英、有機樹脂などの材料を用いることができる。発光素子からの光を取り出す側の基板は、該光に対する透光性を有する材料を用いる。
発光部802は、発光素子として、有機EL素子を備える。有機EL素子は、一対の電極(陽極及び陰極)間に発光性の有機化合物を含む層を有する。有機EL素子の駆動方法は限定されず、アクティブマトリクス方式とパッシブマトリクス方式のいずれを用いても良い。また、トップエミッション(上面射出)構造、ボトムエミッション(下面射出)構造、デュアルエミッション(両面射出)構造のいずれも適用することができる。有機EL素子の具体的な構成、材料に関しては、後述する。
封止材であるガラス層は、例えば、ガラスフリットを用いて形成することができる。また、ガラスリボンを用いて形成することができる。ガラスフリット及びガラスリボンは少なくともガラス材料を含んでいれば良い。
樹脂層又は第1の空間内に含む乾燥剤としては、公知の材料を用いることができる。乾燥剤としては、化学吸着によって水分等を吸着する物質、物理吸着によって水分等を吸着する物質のいずれを用いてもよい。例えば、アルカリ金属の酸化物、アルカリ土類金属の酸化物(酸化カルシウムや酸化バリウム等)、硫酸塩、金属ハロゲン化物、過塩素酸塩、ゼオライト、シリカゲル等が挙げられる。
第1の空間813及び第2の空間811は、例えば、希ガスや窒素ガス等の不活性ガス、又は有機樹脂等で充填されている。また、空間内は、大気圧状態又は減圧状態である。
本実施の形態では、本発明の一態様の発光装置の作製方法について、図3及び図4を用いて説明する。特に、実施の形態1で示した構成例2(図1(B)参照)を例に挙げて説明する。
第1の基板801上に発光部802を形成する(図3(A))。具体的には、発光部802に含まれる有機EL素子や、該有機EL素子の発光を制御するトランジスタ等を作製する。また、アクティブマトリクス型の発光装置の場合、発光部802の他に、駆動回路部などを設けても良い。アクティブマトリクス型の発光装置の構成例については、実施の形態3で詳述する。
本実施の形態では、ガラスフリットを用いてガラス層を形成する。まず、第2の基板806上にフリットペーストを形成する(図3(B))。フリットペーストは、スクリーン印刷法等の印刷法、又はディスペンス法などを用いて形成する。
第2の基板806上で第1の封止材805aの外周を囲むように、第2の封止材805bを形成する(図3(C))。構成例2において、第2の封止材805bは乾燥剤を含む樹脂層である。
第1の基板801及び第2の基板806の貼り合わせを行う(図4(A))。第1の基板801及び第2の基板806を、樹脂層(第2の封止材805b)が密着するように貼り合わせる。
ガラス層に対してレーザ光を照射することで、ガラス層、第1の基板及び第2の基板に囲まれた閉空間である第2の空間811を形成する(図4(C))。レーザ光によって、ガラス層が溶融し、第1の基板801及び第2の基板806との接続部において融着する。その後、ガラス層は固化する。
なお、本実施の形態では、1枚の第1の基板801上に、1つの発光部802を形成する例を示したが、本発明はこれに限られない。第1のステップにおいて、第1の基板801上に複数の発光部802を形成し、第2乃至第5のステップを行った後、第1の基板801を分断することで、1枚の第1の基板801から、複数の発光装置を得ることができる。
本実施の形態では、本発明の一態様の発光装置について図5を用いて説明する。図5(A)は本発明の一態様の発光装置を示す平面図であり、図5(B)は、図5(A)を一点鎖線E−Fで切断した断面図である。
以下に本発明の一態様の発光装置に用いることができる材料の一例を記す。なお、基板、封止材及び乾燥剤については、実施の形態1で例示した材料を適用することができる。
本発明の一態様の発光装置に用いるトランジスタ(トランジスタ140a、140b、152、153等)の構造は特に限定されない。トップゲート型のトランジスタを用いても良いし、逆スタガ型などのボトムゲート型のトランジスタを用いても良い。また、トランジスタに用いる材料についても特に限定されない。
絶縁層124は、第1の電極118の端部を覆って設けられている。絶縁層124の上層に形成される第2の電極122の被覆性を良好なものとするため、絶縁層124の上端部又は下端部に曲率を有する曲面が形成されるようにするのが好ましい。例えば、絶縁層124の上端部又は下端部に曲率半径(0.2μm〜3μm)を有する曲面を持たせるのが好ましい。また、絶縁層124の材料としては、ネガ型の感光性樹脂、もしくはポジ型の感光性樹脂などの有機化合物や、酸化シリコン、酸窒化シリコン等の無機化合物を用いることができる。
第1の電極118は、光を取り出す側と反対側に設けられ、反射性を有する材料を用いて形成される。反射性を有する材料としては、アルミニウム、金、白金、銀、ニッケル、タングステン、クロム、モリブデン、鉄、コバルト、銅、又はパラジウム等の金属材料を用いることができる。また、これらの金属材料や、該金属材料を含む合金に、ランタン、ネオジム、又はゲルマニウムを含ませても良い。そのほか、アルミニウムとチタンの合金、アルミニウムとニッケルの合金、アルミニウムとネオジムの合金などのアルミニウムを含む合金(アルミニウム合金)や銀と銅の合金などの銀を含む合金を用いることもできる。銀と銅の合金は、耐熱性が高いため好ましい。
第2の基板806には、発光素子130と重なる位置にカラーフィルタ166が設けられている。カラーフィルタ166は、発光素子130からの発光色を調色する目的で設けられる。例えば、白色発光の発光素子を用いてフルカラーの表示装置とする場合には、異なる色のカラーフィルタを設けた複数の発光ユニットを用いる。その場合、赤色(R)、緑色(G)、青色(B)の3色を用いても良いし、これに黄色(Y)を加えた4色とすることもできる。
本実施の形態では、本発明の一態様の発光装置に適用することができるEL層の構成例について、図6を用いて説明する。
本実施の形態では、本発明の一態様の発光装置を用いて完成させた様々な電子機器および照明器具の一例について、図7乃至図9を用いて説明する。
まず、第1の基板1001上に、発光部1002を形成した(図11(A))。本実施例では、第1の基板1001上に、4つの発光部1002を形成した。図11(C)に、1つの発光部1002の断面図を示す。
また、第2の基板1003上に、ガラス層1053a及び乾燥剤を含む樹脂層1053bを形成した(図11(B))。
第1の基板1001及び第2の基板1003を、減圧下(圧力100Pa)で、0.6kNの力をかけながら、樹脂層1053bが密着するように貼り合わせた。
樹脂層により封止された発光装置を貼り合わせ装置から出した後、大気圧下で、ガラス層1053aにレーザ光を照射した。これにより、ガラスを溶融させ、第1の基板1001及び第2の基板1003との接続部において融着させた。レーザ光の照射は、波長940nmの半導体レーザを用い、出力8W、走査速度1mm/secの条件で行った。レーザ光の照射は、第2の基板1003側から行った。

Claims (9)
- 互いに対向する第1の基板及び第2の基板と、
前記第1の基板上に設けられた発光素子と、
前記発光素子の外周を囲むように設けられた第1の封止材と、
前記第1の封止材の外周を囲むように設けられた第2の封止材と、を有し、
前記発光素子は、一対の電極間に発光性の有機化合物を含む層を有し、
前記第1の封止材又は前記第2の封止材の一方がガラス層であり、
前記第1の封止材又は前記第2の封止材の他方が樹脂層であり、
前記第1の封止材、前記第2の封止材、前記第1の基板及び前記第2の基板に囲まれた第1の空間内に、乾燥剤を含み、
前記第1の封止材、前記第1の基板及び前記第2の基板に囲まれた第2の空間内に、前記発光素子を備える発光装置。 - 請求項1において、
前記第2の空間が、減圧状態である発光装置。 - 互いに対向する第1の基板及び第2の基板と、
前記第1の基板上に設けられた発光素子と、
前記発光素子の外周を囲むように設けられた第1の封止材と、
前記第1の封止材の外周を囲むように設けられた第2の封止材と、を有し、
前記発光素子は、一対の電極間に発光性の有機化合物を含む層を有し、
前記第1の封止材又は前記第2の封止材の一方がガラス層であり、
前記第1の封止材又は前記第2の封止材の他方が樹脂層であり、
前記樹脂層が、乾燥剤を含み、
前記第1の封止材、前記第1の基板及び前記第2の基板に囲まれた空間内に、前記発光素子を備える発光装置。 - 請求項3において、
前記空間が、減圧状態である発光装置。 - 請求項1乃至請求項4のいずれか一項において、
前記第1の封止材が前記ガラス層であり、前記第2の封止材が前記樹脂層である発光装置。 - 請求項1乃至請求項5のいずれか一項において、
前記樹脂層に含まれる樹脂が、光硬化性樹脂である発光装置。 - 請求項1乃至請求項6のいずれか一項に記載の発光装置を表示部に用いた電子機器。
- 請求項1乃至請求項6のいずれか一項に記載の発光装置を発光部に用いた照明装置。
- 第1の基板上に、第1の電極、発光性の有機化合物を含む層、及び第2の電極をこの順で設けることで発光素子を作製し、発光部を形成する第1のステップと、
第2の基板上に、フリットペーストを塗布し加熱することでガラス層を形成する第2のステップと、
不活性雰囲気下で、前記第2の基板上に、乾燥剤を含む光硬化性樹脂を塗布することで樹脂層を形成する第3のステップと、
減圧下で、前記第1の基板及び前記第2の基板を対向して配置し、前記樹脂層に光を照射することで、前記樹脂層、前記第1の基板及び前記第2の基板に囲まれた閉空間を形成する第4のステップと、
大気中で、前記ガラス層にレーザ光を照射することで、前記ガラス層、前記第1の基板及び前記第2の基板に囲まれた閉空間を形成する第5のステップと、をこの順で行い、
前記ガラス層は、前記発光部の外周を囲むように設け、かつ、前記樹脂層は、前記ガラス層の外周を囲むように設ける、発光装置の作製方法。
