Gegenstand der Hauptpatentanmeldung Z 3799 IVb/39c ist ein Verfahren zur Herstellung von hochmolekularen
Polyäthylenen, das dadurch gekennzeichnet ist, daß man Äthylen bei Drücken von mehr
als 10 Atmosphären und Temperaturen von über 50° mit Mischungen aus Aluminiumtrialkylen und Verbindungen
der Metalle der Gruppen IVa bis VIa des Periodischen Systems mit Ordnungszahlen von 22 bis
74 (nämlich Titan, Zirkon, Hafnium, Vanadin, Niob, Tantal, Chrom, Molybdän und Wolfram) zusammenbringt.
Es wurde nun gefunden, daß man hochmolekulare Polyäthylene der gleichen Art wie beim Hauptpatent
auch herstellen kann, wenn man das Äthylen bei Drücken bzw. Partialdrücken von Bruchteilen einer
Atmosphäre bis zu 10 Atmosphären und bei Temperaturen von —20° an aufwärts bzw. bei Drücken von
mehr als 10 Atmosphären und bei Temperaturen zwischen —20° und + 50° mit den Katalysatoren des
Hauptpatents zusammenbringt.
Es wurde weiterhin gefunden, daß an Stelle von Äthylen äthylenhaltige Gasmischungen ohne weiteres
dem Verfahren zugänglich sind.
Es hat sich ergeben, daß bei Verwendung genügender Mengen der schwermetallhaltigen Komponente des
Katalysators titanhaltige Mischkatalysatoren aktiver sind und zu höhermolekularen Produkten führen als
zirkonhaltige. Läßt man beispielsweise Titantetrachlorid in eine Hexanlösung von Aluminiumtriäthyl
im molekularen Verhältnis von 1 : 8 eintropfen, so färbt sich die Lösung dunkel, und es fällt ein schwerlöslicher
schwarzer Niederschlag aus, der Aluminium und Titan enthält. Diese schwerlösliche, ihrer Natur
nach noch nicht klar erkannte Verbindung ist der eigentliche Polymerisationserreger, und man kann mit
Suspensionen dieses festen Produktes in einem Lösungsmittel, wie Hexan, Äthylen ohne weiteres
auch bei Normaldruck polymerisieren. Auch der Hexananteil dieser Mischung ist tiefgefärbt und enthält
die gleiche Verbindung offenbar in kolloidaler Verteilung. Es hängt nun von den Versuchsbedingungen ab, wieviel des Katalysators kolloidal in
Lösung bleibt und wieviel sich fest abscheidet. Selbstverständlich ist die kolloidal gelöste Form reaktionsfähiger
und läßt sich besser dosieren als der schwerlösliche Niederschlag.
Die beim Arbeiten mit dem Niederschlag sich ergebenden Schwierigkeiten lassen sich ohne weiteres
überwinden, wenn man anfangs statt einer Lösung von Aluminiumtriäthyl in Hexan die Lösung eines
höheren Aluminiumtrialkyls verwendet, z. B. ein Aluminiumtrialkyl von der durchschnittlichen Zusammensetzung
eines Aluminiumtrioktyls, das nach dem Verfahren des Patents 917 006, Beispiel 10, ge-

wonnen worden ist. In diesem Fall erhält man eine völlig homogene, dunkelgefärbte Lösung des Polymerisationskatalysators.
Es wurde festgestellt, daß die Aktivität der Katalysatoren allgemein erheblich gesteigert
wird, wenn man zur Herstellung der Katalysatoren nicht von einem relativ niedrigmolekularen
Aluminiumtrialkyl ausgeht, sondern von einem Aluminiumtrialkyl mit größeren Alkylresten, wie es
vorteilhaft etwa aus Aluminiumtriäthyl und Äthylen nach dem Verfahren des Patents 917 006 gewonnen
werden kann.
Um die reine Polymerisationskatalyse zu erzielen, bedarf es ausreichender Mengen der Schwermetallverbindungen.
Ein besonders günstiges Mengenverhältnis zwischen Aluminiumalkyl und Schwermetallverbindungen
läßt sich etwa in folgender Weise festlegen: Ist MeXn die Schwermetallverbindung,
worin Me das Schwermetall, X den nichtmetallischen Rest und η die Wertigkeit des Schwermetalls bedeutet,
so verwendet man zweckmäßig 2 η bis 3 m Aluminiumtrialkyl pro Molekül der Schwermetallverbindung.
Nur speziell bei Acetylacetonaten hat sich die Anwendung der doppelten Menge Aluminiumtrialkyl als
zweckmäßig erwiesen.
Die nach dem neuen Verfahren gewonnenen Polyäthylene, insbesondere diejenigen, die auf der Grundlage
der Kombinatiion Titantetrachlorid + Aluminiumtrialkyl gewonnen werden, haben die im Hauptpatent
geschilderten Eigenschaften, zeichnen sich aber

darüber hinaus durch besonders wertvolle Eigen- herausgeschnittener schmaler Streifen läßt sich auf die
schäften aus. Sie haben Erweichungspunkte von über etwa drei-bis vierfache Länge in der Kälte auseinander-150°.
Sie sind, insbesondere auch in der Kälte, reck- ziehen, wobei die charakteristischen Erscheinungen zu
bar und lassen sich in dieser Weise zu Bändern, beobachten sind, wie man sie vom Recken der PolyDrähten

Beispiel 1 M&a. verfährt zunächst wie im Beispiel 2 bein
20 ecm Aluminiumtriäthyl werden unter Luft- io schrieben, nimmt aber als Polymerisationserreger den
ausschluß 2 g Chromacetylacetonat eingetragen. Unter bei der Verdünnung mit Hexan sich absetzenden
Erwärmung färbt sich die Lösung schwarz, scheidet schwarzen Niederschlag, den man durch mehrfaches
aber keinen nennenswerten Niederschlag aus. Die Aufschlämmen in Hexan, Absitzenlassen und AbMischung
wird in einem 500-ccm-Autoklav mit gießen des Lösungsmittels ■— alles unter Luft-200
ecm Hexan verdünnt, dann 70 Atmosphären 15 ausschluß — restlos von gelösten Anteilen des
Äthylen aufgepreßt und geschüttelt. Der Druck geht Aluminiumtriäthyls befreit und zum Schluß endgültig
rasch auf etwa 25 Atmosphären herunter, da sich zu- in Hexan aufschlämmt. Der weitere Versuchsverlauf
nächst das Lösungsmittel mit dem Äthylen sättigt. gleicht dem im vorigen Beispiel geschilderten weit-Man
preßt erneut Äthylen auf und schüttelt weiter. gehend.
Der Druck nimmt jetzt etwas langsamer ab. Man 20 Beisoiel 4
wiederholt diese Operation in jeweils steigenden zeitlichen Abständen mehrmals. Insgesamt wurden im 500 ecm Paraffinum liquidum, durch Einleiten von
Verlauf von 24 Stunden 110 g Äthylen in den Autoklav Stickstoff und Erwärmen auf 100° luftfrei gemacht,
eingeführt. Der Druck betrug nach 24 Stunden noch werden nach dem Wiedererkalten mit 58 g eines
30 Atmosphären. Die Temperatur ging zu Beginn des 25 Aluminiumtrialkyls von der durchschnittlichen ZuVersuchs
spontan auf 30° herauf. Nach 24 Stunden sammensetzung des Aluminiumtridodecyls (hergestellt
wurden 41 g unverändertes Äthylen wieder abgeblasen, nach Patent 917 006) versetzt und sodann unter
der Autoklav wurde geöffnet und der Inhalt sofort mit Rühren unter Stickstoff mit 2,6 g Titantetrachlorid
Methanol versetzt. Der Autoklavinhalt bildet eine vermischt. Die Mischung wird undurchsichtig
halbfeste Masse, die man herausspült, absaugt und 30 schwarz. Es scheidet sich jedoch kein fester Niederanschließend mit methanolischer Salzsäure zur Ent- schlag ab. Alsdann leitet man unter Rühren bei
fernung der Katalysatoranteile erwärmt und erneut Zimmertemperatur Äthylen ein. Die Temperatur steigt
filtriert. Man erhält nach dem Trocknen 69 g eines im Verlauf einer halben Stunde spontan von 23 auf
farblosen, in allen organischen Lösungsmitteln un- 43°, und das Äthylen wird lebhaft mit einer Gelöslichen
Pulvers, das sich zwischen erhitzten Metall- 35 schwindigkeit von etwa 10 g/Std. absorbiert. Schon
platten leicht zu einer Folie auspressen läßt. bald nach Beginn des Versuches kann man erkennen,
. . daß sich ein schwerlöslicher Stoff in der Mischung
Beispiel I abscheidet. Nach etwa 3 bis 4 Stunden läßt die
In 40 ecm Aluminiumtriäthyl läßt man unter Luft- Äthylenaufnahme nach. Man versetzt dann unter
abschluß 2 g Titantetrachlorid eintropfen, wobei sich 40 Rühren mit 200 ecm Hexan, um die Reaktionsunter
lebhafter Selbsterwärmung ein schwarzer mischung zu verdünnen und besser rührbar zu machen,
Niederschlag bildet. Die Mischung wird mit 200 ecm und trägt dann Methanol ein. Die Reaktionsmischung
Hexan versetzt, wobei ein Teil des gebildeten dunklen bleibt zunächst noch dunkel. Erst beim Absaugen auf
Stoffes ausfällt und ein anderer Teil in vermutlich einer Nutsche bei Berührung mit Luft ändert sie sich
kolloidaler Lösung im Hexan mit dunkler Farbe in 45 und schlägt in ein helles Olivgrün um. Diese Färbung
Lösung bleibt. Man gießt den Hexananteil in einen ist zunächst dem abgesaugten Niederschlag eigentümmit
Stickstoff gefüllten 500-ccm-Autoklav über und lieh. Erwärmt man den Niederschlag nach dem Auspreßt
Äthylen bis zu einem Druck von 60 Atmosphären waschen mit Methanol mit etwa 5°/oiger Salpetersäure
auf. Schüttelt man jetzt, so steigt die Temperatur ganz leicht, so wird er reinweiß. Man saugt dann
spontan bis 60°, und der Druck fällt bis auf 25 Atmo- 50 wiederum ab, wäscht mit Methanol und trocknet. Man

werden. Der Autoklavinhalt erwies sich als mählich, über einen längeren Zeitraum verteilt, zueine
feste und nur schwierig zu zerkleinernde Masse, 60 tropft. Man kann den gleichen Versuch auch unter
die das verwendete Lösungsmittel völlig in sich auf- Kühlung der Reaktionsmischung auf 0° und auf
gesogen hatte. Man bricht diese in geeigneter Weise —20° durchführen, insbesondere dann, wenn man
aus dem Autoklav heraus, trägt sie in Methanol ein statt Paraffinum liquidum ein leichter bewegliches
und erwärmt anschließend mit methanolischer Salz- Lösungsmittel, etwa Hexan, verwendet. Der Versuch
säure. Nach dem Filtrieren, Auswaschen mit Methanol 65 dauert dann allerdings länger,
und Trocknen gewinnt man 80 g eines weißen schwer-
löslichen Purvers, das sich zwischen erhitzten Metall- Beispiel 5

von außerordentlich guten mechanischen Eigen- Lösung des Katalysators in dem Paraffinum liquidum
schäften verpressen läßt. Ein aus einer solchen Folie 70 auf etwa 40 bis 50° an und leitet die Gasmischung
durch, die etwa 10 bis 20% Äthylen enthält, wie man sie durch thermisches Kracken von Äthan erhalten
kann. Der Versuchsverlauf ist im wesentlichen der gleiche, jedoch braucht man etwa 10 bis 12 Stunden,
bis sich die gleiche Menge Polymerisat gebildet hat.
In einem 14-1-Rührautoklav vermischt man unter
Stickstoff 6 1 Benzol, 88 g Aluminiumtriäthyl und 10 g Zirkonacetylacetonat. Dann erwärmt man auf 50° und
leitet Äthylen bis zu einem Druck von etwa 5 Atmosphären ein. Man hält den Druck auf dieser Höhe und
rührt 10 Stunden lang. Läßt man dann erkalten, bläst das nicht umgesetzte Äthylen ab und öffnet den
Autoklav, so stellt man fest, daß sich am Rührer und auch am Boden des Autoklavs ein farbloses Polymeres
in einer außerordentlich eigenartigen Form abgeschieden hat. Das Polymere besteht aus einem Haufwerk
von leicht angequollenen Fäden, die etwa an langfaserigen Asbest erinnern. Die Masse läßt sich
sehr leicht vom Rührer ablösen, mit Benzol auswaschen und in den trockenen Zustand überführen.
Bei spiel 7
In der im vorigen Beispiel beschriebenen Apparatur werden 6 1 Hexan, 82 g Aluminiumtriäthyl und 24 g
Titantetrachlorid mit Äthylen von maximal 5 Atmosphären Druck gerührt. Man beginnt den Versuch bei
25°. Die Temperatur steigt spontan auf 35°. Nach insgesamt 12 Stunden bricht man den Versuch ab. Im
Autoklav befindet sich dann ein kaum mehr rührbarex Brei, den man in der Weise aufarbeitet, wie sie im
Beispiel 2 näher beschrieben worden ist. Man erhält rund 1 kg eines farblosen, unmittelbar als Preßpulver
geeigneten hochwertigen Polyäthylens.
Claims (4)
1. Verfahren zur Herstellung von hochmolekularen Polyäthylenen durch Polymerisation
von Äthylen mit Mischungen aus Aluminiumtrialkylen und Verbindungen der Metalle der
Gruppen IVa bis VIa des Periodischen Systems mit Ordnungszahlen von 22 bis 74 nach Hauptpatentanmeldung
Z 3799 IVb/39c, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß man das Äthylen bei Drücken
bzw. Partialdrücken von Bruchteilen einer Atmosphäre bis zu 10 Atmosphären und bei Temperaturen
von —20° an aufwärts bzw. bei Drücken von mehr als 10 Atmosphären und bei Temperaturen
zwischen ·—20° und + 50° mit den Katalysatoren zusammenbringt.
2. Verfahren nach Anspruch 1, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß man an Stelle von Äthylen äthylenhaltige
Gasmischungen verwendet.
3. Verfahren nach Ansprüchen 1 und 2, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß man Aluminiumtrialkyle mit
größeren Resten, z. B. von der Größenordnung eines Aluminiumtrioktyls oder Aluminiumtridödecyls,
verwendet, vorzugsweise solche, die nach Patent 917 006 hergestellt worden, sind.
4. Verfahren nach Ansprüchen 1 bis 3, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß auf 1 Mol Schwermetallverbindung
der Formel MeXn, worin Me ein Schwermetall, X den nichtmetallischen Rest und
11 die Wertigkeit des Schwermetalls bedeuten, 2w
bis 3 η Mol Aluminiumtrialkyl, bei Schwermetallacetylacetonaten
das Doppelte verwendet werden.
