Abstract

本発明は、二酸化炭素を還元する方法に関する。
特許文献1~7および非特許文献1~6は、二酸化炭素を還元する方法を開示している。特許文献8は、水を電気分解する方法を開示している(特に図3)。

以下、本発明の実施の形態を説明する。
(実施の形態1)
(二酸化炭素を還元するための装置)
図1は、実施の形態1による二酸化炭素を還元するための装置を示す。当該装置は、陰極室102、陽極室105、および固体電解質膜106を具備する。

陰極室102は作用極101を具備する。
作用極101は、第1電解液107に接している。具体的には、作用極101は第1電解液107に浸漬されている。
作用極101の材料の例は、銅、金、銀、カドミウム、インジウム、錫、鉛、またはこれらの合金である。銅が好ましい。作用極101の材料の他の例は、二酸化炭素を還元可能な金属化合物である。当該材料が第1電解液107に接する限り、作用極101の一部のみが第1電解液107に浸漬され得る。
陽極室105は対極104を具備する。
対極104は、第2電解液108に接している。具体的には、対極104は第2電解液108に浸漬されている。
対極104は、図2Aに示されるように、窒化物半導体から形成される窒化物半導体領域302を表面に具備する。当該窒化物半導体は、好ましくは窒化ガリウムである。図2Aでは、対極104の表面の一部に正方形の窒化物半導体領域302が形成されている。しかし、対極104の全ての表面に窒化物半導体領域302が形成され得る。窒化物半導体領域302の形状は正方形に限定されない。
図2Bおよび図2Cに示されるように、窒化物半導体領域302に金属配線303が設けられることが好ましい。金属配線303は窒化物半導体領域302に接することが好ましい。後述するように、窒化物半導体領域302に光源103より光が照射される。
図2Bに示されるように、複数の金属配線303が設けられ得る。各金属配線303は線状である。そして、当該複数の金属配線303は互いに平行である。
図2Cに示されるように、メッシュの形状を有する複数の金属配線303が設けられ得る。金属配線303の形状は特に限定されない。
金属配線303は、窒化物半導体とオーミック接合を形成し得ることが好ましい。好適な金属配線303の材料の例は、チタンである。具体的には、金属配線303は、チタン配線、チタン/ニッケル積層配線、チタン/アルミニウム積層配線、チタン/金積層配線、またはチタン/銀積層配線である。チタン/ニッケル積層配線が好ましい。
当該窒化物半導体が第2電解液108に接する限り、対極104の一部のみが第2電解液108に浸漬され得る。
陰極室102の内部には、第1電解液107が保持される。陽極室105の内部には、第2電解液108が保持される。
第1電解液107の例は、炭酸水素カリウム水溶液、炭酸水素ナトリウム水溶液、塩化カリウム水溶液、硫酸カリウム水溶液、またはリン酸カリウム水溶液である。炭酸水素カリウム水溶液が好ましい。第1電解液107は、二酸化炭素が第1電解107に溶解した状態において弱酸性であることが好ましい。
第2電解液108の例は、水酸化ナトリウム水溶液または水酸化カリウム水溶液である。水酸化ナトリウム水溶液が好ましい。第2電解液は強塩基性であることが好ましい。
第1電解液107の溶質と第2電解液108の溶質は同一であってもよいが、異なっている方が好適である。
第1電解液107は二酸化炭素を含有する。二酸化炭素の濃度は特に限定されない。
第1電解液107を第2電解液108から分離するために、固体電解質膜106は陰極室102および陽極室105との間に挟まれている。すなわち、本装置では、第1電解液107および第2電解液108は混ざらない。
固体電解質膜106は、プロトンのみが通過し、かつ他の物質が通過できない限り、特に限定されない。固体電解質膜106の例は、ナフィオン(登録商標)である。
作用極101は作用極端子110を具備する。対極104は対極端子111を具備する。作用極端子110および対極端子111は、導線112により電気的に接続されている。すなわち、作用極101は導線112を介して対極104に電気的に接続されている。図2Bおよび図2Cに示されるように、金属配線303は、対極端子111に電気的に接続されている。
(二酸化炭素の還元方法)
次に、上述された装置を用いて、二酸化炭素を還元する方法を説明する。
二酸化炭素還元装置は、室温かつ大気圧下に置かれ得る。
図1に示されるように、光源103から、窒化物半導体領域302に光が照射される。窒化物半導体領域302の少なくとも一部に光が照射される。窒化物半導体領域302の全てに光が照射され得る。
光源103の例は、キセノンランプである。
次に、上述された装置を用いて、二酸化炭素を還元する方法を説明する。
二酸化炭素還元装置は、室温かつ大気圧下に置かれ得る。
図1に示されるように、光源103から、窒化物半導体領域302に光が照射される。窒化物半導体領域302の少なくとも一部に光が照射される。窒化物半導体領域302の全てに光が照射され得る。
光源103の例は、キセノンランプである。
光源103からの光は、250ナノメートル以上400ナノメートル以下の波長を有することが好ましい。光は、250ナノメートル以上365ナノメートル以下の波長を有することがより好ましい。
金属配線303は、窒化物半導体領域302の表面に設けられ得る。すなわち、光源103からの光は金属配線303および窒化物半導体領域302に照射される。さらに、金属配線303は絶縁性材料(図示せず)で被覆されていることが好ましい。
図1に示されるように、本装置は管109を具備することが好ましい。当該管109を通って第1電解液107に二酸化炭素が供給されながら、第1電解液107に含有される二酸化炭素が還元されることが好ましい。管109の一端は、第1電解液107に浸漬されている。二酸化炭素の還元を開始する前に、管109を通って二酸化炭素を供給することによって、充分な量の二酸化炭素を第1電解液107に溶解することも好ましい。
作用極101が、銅、金、銀、カドミウム、インジウム、錫、または鉛のような金属を具備する場合、第1電解液107に含有される二酸化炭素は還元されて一酸化炭素または蟻酸を生成する。
(実施例1)
以下の実施例を参照して、本発明をより詳細に説明する。

(対極の調製)
サファイヤ基板上に、n型窒化ガリウム薄膜を有機金属気相成長法によりエピタキシャル成長させた。このn型窒化ガリウム薄膜は、窒化物半導体領域302に対応する。次いで、n型窒化ガリウム薄膜の表面に、フォトリソグラフィ、電子ビーム蒸着、およびリフトオフのような一般的な半導体プロセスを用いて、メッシュ状の金属配線303を形成した。当該金属配線303は、Ti/Niの二層からなった。当該金属配線303は、幅20マイクロメートル、厚み0.5マイクロメートルであった。メッシュにおける隣接する2つの金属配線の間隔は、50マイクロメートルであった。金属配線303に電気的に接続された対極端子111が形成された。このようにして、図2Cに示すように、金属配線303を具備するn型窒化ガリウムから形成された窒化物半導体領域302を具備する対極104を得た。

陽極室105は窓(図示せず)を具備していた。当該窓を介して、光源103からの光が窒化物半導体領域302に照射された。
図3は、光が窒化物半導体領域302に照射される前後の電流変化を示すグラフである。図3に示されるように、光が窒化物半導体領域302に照射されると、導線112に電流が流れた。光が消されると、電流の流れが止まった。これは、作用極101または対極104の少なくとも一方の電極において反応が生じたことを意味する。
管109を通して二酸化炭素を30分間、第1電解液107にバブリングにより供給した。
陽極室105は窓(図示せず)を具備していた。当該窓を介して、光源103からの光が窒化物半導体領域302に照射された。
図3は、光が窒化物半導体領域302に照射される前後の電流変化を示すグラフである。図3に示されるように、光が窒化物半導体領域302に照射されると、導線112に電流が流れた。光が消されると、電流の流れが止まった。これは、作用極101または対極104の少なくとも一方の電極において反応が生じたことを意味する。
本発明者らは、以下のように、当該反応を詳細に調査した。具体的には、陰極室102を密閉した後、再度、窒化物半導体領域302に光を照射した。陰極室102において生じた気体成分はガスクロマトグラフィにより分析された。陰極室102において生じた液体成分は液体クロマトグラフィにより分析された。
その結果、陰極室102には、蟻酸、一酸化炭素、およびメタンが生成されていることが確認された。

さらに、光照射による光電流量から、反応に関与した電荷量(クーロン量)を算出した。図4は、当該電荷量(横軸)および得られた蟻酸の量(縦軸)の関係を示す。図4から明らかなように、蟻酸の量は、電荷量に比例した。このことは、窒化物半導体領域302上では、光照射により二酸化炭素が還元される触媒反応が生じたことを意味する。
(実施例2)
Ti/Niの二層からなる金属配線303に代え、ニッケルからなる金属配線303を用いたこと以外は、実施例1と同様に実験を行った。

図5は、実施例1、実施例2、および実施例3において、光が窒化物半導体領域302に照射される前後の電流変化を示すグラフである。図5において、符号(a)、(b)、および(c)は、それぞれ、実施例1、実施例2、および実施例3の結果を示す。図5に示されるように、実施例1の電流量が一番大きく、実施例3の電流量が一番小さかった。
図6は、光照射時間(横軸)および蟻酸の生成量(縦軸)の関係を示す。図6において、(a)、(b)、および(c)は、それぞれ、実施例1、実施例2、および実施例3の結果を示す。図6に示されるように、光照射時間が同一である場合、実施例1において生成された蟻酸の量が一番大きく、実施例3において生成された蟻酸の量が一番少なかった。
図5および図6から明らかなように、金属配線303を用いた場合には、単位時間あたりの蟻酸の生成量が増加した。Ti/Niの二層からなる金属配線303が用いられた場合には、単位時間あたりの蟻酸の生成量がより増加した。
本発明は、二酸化炭素を還元する方法を提供する。
Claims (19)
- 二酸化炭素を還元するための装置を用いて二酸化炭素を還元する方法であって、以下の工程を具備する:
以下を具備する二酸化炭素還元装置を用意する工程(a)、
陰極室、
陽極室、および
固体電解質膜、ここで
前記陰極室は作用極を具備し、
前記作用極は、金属または金属化合物を具備し、
前記陽極室は対極を具備し、
前記対極は、窒化物半導体から形成される領域を表面に具備し、
前記陰極室の内部には、第1電解液が保持され、
前記陽極室の内部には、第2電解液が保持され、
前記作用極は、前記第1電解液に接しており、
前記対極は、前記第2電解液に接しており、
前記固体電解質膜は、前記陰極室および前記陽極室との間に挟まれ、
前記第1電解液は前記二酸化炭素を含有しており、および
前記作用極は前記対極に電気的に接続され、
前記領域に250ナノメートル以上400ナノメートル以下の波長を有する光を照射して、前記第1電解液に含有されている二酸化炭素を還元する工程(b)。 - 請求項1に記載の方法であって、
前記窒化物半導体は窒化ガリウムである。 - 請求項2に記載の方法であって、
前記窒化物半導体はn型である。 - 請求項1に記載の方法であって、
前記窒化物半導体はn型である。 - 請求項1に記載の方法であって、
前記作用極は、金属を具備する。 - 請求項5に記載の方法であって、
前記金属は、銅、金、銀、カドミウム、インジウム、錫、鉛、またはこれらの合金である。 - 請求項6に記載の方法であって、
前記金属は銅である。 - 請求項1に記載の方法であって、
前記第1電解液は、炭酸水素カリウム水溶液、炭酸水素ナトリウム水溶液、塩化カリウム水溶液、硫酸カリウム水溶液、またはリン酸カリウム水溶液である。 - 請求項8に記載の方法であって、
前記第1電解液は、炭酸水素カリウム水溶液である。 - 請求項1に記載の方法であって、
前記第2電解液は、水酸化ナトリウム水溶液または水酸化カリウム水溶液である。 - 請求項1に記載の方法であって、
前記工程(b)において、前記装置は室温かつ大気圧下におかれる。 - 請求項1に記載の方法であって、
金属配線が前記領域の表面に設けられ、
前記光は、前記領域だけでなく前記金属配線にも照射される。 - 請求項12に記載の方法であって、
複数の前記金属配線が設けられ、
各金属配線は互いに平行である。 - 請求項12に記載の方法であって、
複数の前記金属配線が設けられ、
複数の前記金属配線はメッシュの形状を有している。 - 請求項12に記載の方法であって、
前記金属配線はチタンを具備する。 - 請求項12に記載の方法であって、
前記金属配線はチタン/ニッケル積層配線を具備する。 - 請求項1に記載の方法であって、
工程(b)において、蟻酸が得られる。 - 請求項1に記載の方法であって、
工程(b)において、一酸化炭素が得られる。 - 請求項1に記載の方法であって、
