Abstract

알에프아이디 태그가 달린 물품을 이용한 재고 조사 시스템{INVENTORY SYSTEM USING ARTICLES WITH RFID TAGS}
도서관에서는 서적,정기간행물, 시청각 제품등의 많은 재고목록을 유지하고 통제하는 엄청난 업무에 시달린다. 도서관 소장품(library collection) 가운데 물품의 체크인/체크아웃, 재고조사 및 도난 방지를 용이하게 하려고 대부분의 도서관에서는 물품 위에 바코드 및/또는 감광성 자기 스트립(sensitizable magnetic strips)을 붙여둔다. 바코드에 의해 스캐너를 사용하여 물품을 신속하게 식별할 수 있게 된다. 도난 방지를 위해 도서관 출구에 있는 자기 검출장치와 연관하여 자기 스트립이 사용된다. 이 자기 스트립은 통상 감광화되어 있다. 고객이 물품을 체크아웃할 때 자기 스트립은 탈감광화된다. 고객이 물품을 도서관에 반환할 때 자기 스트립이 다시 감광화된다. 고객이 감광화된 자기 스트립이 달린 물품을 가지고 도서관 출구를 통과하려고 하는 경우 자기검출장치는 경보를 울리게 된다.
자기 스트립 기반형 시스템은 여러가지 결점이 있다. 자기 스트립을 탈감광화시키고 재감광화시키는데 특수장비가 사용되어야 한다. 전형적으로, 체크인과 체크아웃이 정확히 수행되도록 하기 위하여 도서관 직원이 그 장비를 조작하여야 한다. 그러한 시스템의 일예가 미국특허 제 4,141,078호(Bridges, Jr 외)에 기술되어 있다. 태그달린 물품에 의존하며 고객에 의해서만 조작되도록 설계되어 있는 다른 체크인/체크아웃 시스템은 미국특허 제 5,288,980호(Patel 외)에 기술되어 있다. 도서관에 사용하기 적합한 또 다른 범용 물품재고조사 통제 시스템이 미국특허 제 4,881,061호(Chambers)에 기술되어 있다.
물품을 취급하는 종래의 도서관 절차는 시간 소모적이고 많은 실수를 야기하는 것이다. 물품을 선반에 재배열하는 일은 특히 실수하기 쉽고 시간소모적인 작업이다. 많은 물품들이 도서관의 틀린 장소에 반환되고, 충분한 재고조사를 통하여 발견되기 전까지는 분실된 것으로 간주된다. 더욱이 도서관 소장품의 재고조사를 한다는 것은 현재로서 비싸고 시간소모적인 작업이라서, 대부분의 도서관들은 한다손치더라도 해야할 만큼 빈번하게 충분한 재고목록조사를 하지 않고 있다.
종종 도서관들은 체크아웃 데이터를 검토하여 어느 물품이 고객들에게 가장 인기가 있는 것인지를 판단한다. 이러한 정보는 새로운 구매에 관한 결정을 내리거나 기존 자원의 위치를 더 잘 정하는 데 사용될 수 있다. 그러나, 도서관들은 물품을 반출하지는 않지만 도서관내에서 그 물품을 사용하는 고객들에 의한 소장품의 사용에 관한 많은 양의 정보를 얻지 못하고 있다. 사실상, 소위 " 내부순환 (internal circulation)"이 많은 도서관들의 총 순환중 2/3 내지 3/4를 차지 한다. 따라서, 체크아웃 데이터는 어느 물품이 어떤 고객들에게 인기가 있는 지를 정확하게 측정하지 못하고 있다.
도서관을 운영하는데 가장 큰 경비는 인건비이다. 도서관들은 더 적은 종업원으로 필요한 기능들을 수행하는 방법을 항상 추구하고 있다.
따라서, 도서관 종업원들이 물품을 취급하는데 소비하는 시간과 노력을 경감시키고 소장품이 사용되는 방법에 관한 더 좋은 정보를 도서관 경영자들에게 제공하는 시스템이 필요하다. 본 발명은 이러한 수요를 충족시켜준다.
본 발명은 일반적으로 도서관 재고 및 순환 통제 시스템(library inventory and circulation control system)에 관한 것이고, 특히 서적등에 RFID 태그를 사용하는 시스템에 관한 것이다.

어떤 전문용어는 편의상 사용될 뿐이며 본 발명을 한정하는 것이 아니다. 도면에서 동일한 참고번호는 몇개의 도면에 걸쳐 동일한 요소들을 지정하는데 사용된다.
도1은 본 발명의 신규한 특징들을 설명하는데 사용할 도서관(10) 형태의 저장소의 블록선도이다. 본 발명은 도서관의 환경에서 설명되지만, 본 발명의 분야는 물품들이 저장소에 유지되고 정기적으로 이동되거나(영구적으로) 또는 비디오점, 대여점 등과 같이 고객들에 의해 한정된 기간동안 대출되는 다른 환경들을 포함한다. 저장소는 또한 상업용/산업용 환경과 연관될 수도 있고, 예컨대 공구 저장소(tool crib), 정비 창고(maintenance depot) 등일 수 있다.
여기에 정의된 질문기(interrogator)는 RFID 태그에 에너지를 결합시켜 태그를 구동시키고 이 태그로 부터 데이터를 수신하는데 사용되는 장치이다. 본 발명은 스캐너, "스마트(smart)" 및 "덤(dumb)" 주각들 (pedestals) 등의 다른 형태의 질문기들을 사용한다.
도1에서, 도서관(10)은 도서관 고객들이 사용하는 공중공간지역(16)과 종업원 공간지역(18)으로 분할된다. 공중공간지역(16)은 서적, 정기간행물, 오디오 테이프, CD, 비디오테이프, 월 아트(wall art), 시트 뮤직(sheet music)(22) 등의 물품들을 보유하는 다수의 선반 또는 서가 형태의 저장소, 부가적인 선반이나 서가(24)들을 갖는 정기간행물실(23), 및 온라인 컴퓨터화된 다수의 도서관 소유물 카탈로그들을 포함한다. 순환 데스크(28)는 상기 공중공간지역(16)의 일부를 상기 종업원 공간지역(18)의 일부로 부터 분리시킨다. 종업원 공간지역(18)은 후방 사무소 운영지역(30)을 포함한다. 부가적인 온라인 컴퓨터화된 카탈로그들(26)이 순환데스크(28)와 후방 사무소운영지역(30)에 위치한다. 이런 장소들에는 바코드 판독기(46) 또는 컴퓨터(48)와 같은 다른 잡다한 컴퓨터 장비들이 배치될 수 있다. 컴퓨터(48)와 연결된 데이터베이스는 고객들에 의해 체크아웃된 물품들(22)에 관한 데이터 뿐만 아니라 도서관 소장품에 있는 모든 물품들(22)에 대한 재고데이터를 저장한다. 상기 온라인 카탈로그들(26)은 컴퓨터(48)와 그 데이터베이스에 접속되어 있다. 상술한 모든 특징과 요소들은 통상적인 것이다. 전형적으로 도서관들은 비디오, 시디롬, 카세트 등과 같은 다른 자원정보에 할당된 지역들을 포함한다. 간단히 말해서 이러한 선택적인 자원들은 도1에 나타나 있지 않다. 명세서 전반을 통해 물품과 서적이라는 단어는 상호변환가능하게 사용된다. 그러나, "물품(article)"이라는 단어의 범주는 비디오, 시디롬, 카세트, 신문 등과 같이 도서관에서 전형적으로 볼수 있는 다른 형식의 항목들을 포함할 수 있다고 본다.
도서관(10)은 재고통제 및 물품사용추적을 위한 신규한 방법 및 시스템과 관련한 요소들을 포함한다.
첫째, 도서관은 다수의 "스마트" 물품반환지역 즉 북드롭(book drops)을 포함한다. 종래기술의 북드롭은 체크인 및 선반 재배열을 위해 고객들이 반환중이던 책들을 위한 임시 저장소를 제공하는 기능을 할 뿐이었다. 본 발명의 "스마트" 북드롭들은 상기 북드롭을 통과중인 물품(22)을 질문하고 이들의 신원에 관한 정보를 읽고, 기록하고 처리한다. 도1은 한개의 스마트 외부 물품반환소 즉 북드롭(32)과 세개의 스마트 내부 물품반환소 즉 북드롭(34)를 보여준다. 외부 북드롭(32)에 의해 고객들은 도서관(10)이 닫힐 때나 고객이 도서관(10)에 물리적으로 입장하기를 원치않을 때 물품을 반환할 수 있게 한다. 도서관 방침은 체크아웃된 모든 물품(22)이 외부 북드롭(32)에 복귀되기를 요구할 수도 있다. 그래서 북드롭(32) 또는 (34)은 반환중인 물품들(22)에 대한 체크인 터미날로 기능할 수 있다. 내부 북드롭(34)은 공중지역(16) 및/또는 종업원 공간지역(18)에 배치될 수 있다. 고객들이 물품(22)을 순환데스크(28)로 반환할 때 종업원은 종업원 공간지역(18)에 위치한 내부 북드롭(34)에 물품(22)을 놓는다. 고객들은 공중장소에 위치한 내부 북드롭(34)들중 어느 하나에 대출받은 물품들(22)을 놓을 수도 있다. 두가지 경우에, 상기 대출받은 물품들은 체크아웃된 후 반환중인 물품들이거나, 도서관에 있는 동안 고객이 사용했지만 체크아웃되지 않은 물품들일 수 있다. 각 물품들(22)에는 가끔 "인텔리전트 태그(intelligent tag)"라고 하는 무선주파수 식별(RFID) 태그가 부착되어 있다. 그래서 상기 RFID 태그는 본 발명의 개시된 실시예에서 지능 보안 태그(intelligent security tag)가 된다. 이 RFID 태그들이 도2를 참고하여 후술되고 있다. RFID 태그들이 적절하게 질문받으면, 이 태그들은 물품(22)의 신원과 도서관내의 적절한 위치를 판단하는데 사용할 수 있는 정보를 되보낸다.
둘째, 도서관(10)는 한쌍 이상의 "스마트" 주각("smart" pedestals)(36)을 포함한다. 설명한 바와 같은 1쌍의 "스마트 주각"들은 RFID 태그들과 통신할 수 있는 질문기들을 내포한 주각형상의 장치이다. 1쌍의 스마트 주각들(36)은 태그달린 물품들(22)이 상기 주각들(36)사이의 소정구간내에 있을 때 RFID 태그들을 판독한다. 도1에서, 1쌍의 스마트 주각들(36)은 도서관(10)에 고객이 출입하기 위해 통과해야 하는 구간을 감시한다. 다른 1쌍의 스마트 주각들(36)은 종업원들이 도서관(10)을 출입하는 구간을 감시한다. 상기 구간들 각각은 감시 카메라(38) 또는 생물측정장치(biometric measurement device)에 의해 선택적으로 감시된다. 각 쌍의 스마트 주각들(36)의 출력은 컴퓨터(48)의 데이터베이스에 연결되어, 상기 주각들(36) 사이의 구간내에 있는 검출된 물품들(22)이 적절하게 체크아웃되었는지를 확인한다. 도서관(10)은 자기보안태그(magnetic security tags) 또는 넌인텔리전트 공진 보안태그(non-intelligent resonant security tags)와 같은 종래기술의 보안태그를 붙인 물품들의 존재를 검출하기 위해 "덤 주각(dumb pedestals)"(40) 이라는 1쌍의 센서들을 포함한다. 이 덤 주각은 정기간행물들이 도서관(10)의 지정부위(예컨대, 정기 간행물실 23)안에 유지되는 것을 보장하는데 사용될 수 있다. 택일적으로 덤 주각(40)은 스마트 주각(36)과 유사하지만 컴퓨터(48)의 데이터 베이스에 접속되지 않는다. 정기간행물실(23)에서는 어떤 물품도 이동하는 것이 허용되지 않기 때문에 덤 주각들(40)사이에 어떤 물품(24)을 검출하면 경보를 개시한다.
세째, 도서관(10)은 휴대용 무선주파수(RFID) 태그 스캐너들 즉 소위 "RFID 스캐너들"을 포함한다. 이 스캐너들은 RFID 태그와 연관된 식별정보를 판독할 수 있고, 이후 더 자세히 설명한다. 하나의 RFID 스캐너(42)가 순환데스크(28)에 보이고, 휴대용 스캐너(42)가 1조의 서가(20)에 인접하여 보인다. 두개의 부가 스캐너들(42)이 후술하는 신규 체크아웃스테이션과 연관되어 있다. 휴대성이 요구되지 않으면, 휴대용 스캐너(42) 대신에 또는 휴대용 스캐너(42)와 합동으로 순환데스크(28)와 신규 체크아웃스테이션에 고정 질문기(43)가 사용될 수 있다.
네째, 도서관은 구내에서 반출할 물품들(22)을 도서관 고객이 체크아웃하게 하는 고객셀프체크아웃스테이션(50)을 포함한다. 체크아웃스테이션(50)은 고정 질문기(43)와, 선택적으로 하나 이상의 선택적인 휴대용 RFID 스캐너들(42)을 포함하고, 두 스캐너들은 상기 체크아웃스테이션(50)에 있는 물품들(22)을 식별하는데 사용된다. 상기 체크아웃스테이션(50)은 상기 고정 질문기(43)와 스캐너(42)로 부터 데이터를 수신하기 위한 적어도 하나의 컴퓨터 단말(52)을 포함하기도 한다. 컴퓨터 단말(52)은 고객식별장치(68)에 연결되기도 한다. 순환데스크(28)도 고정 질문기(43), 선택적 스캐너(42), 컴퓨터 단말(52) 및 고객 식별장치(68)를 포함하며, 이들은 물품체크아웃을 위해 고객이나 종업원이 사용할 수 있다. 고객 셀프체크아웃스테이션(50)은 도 5을 참조하여 더욱 상세히 설명된다.
본 발명의 신규한 시스템들 모두가 각 물품(22)에 부착되는 RFID 태그를 사용한다. 그러한 태그들은 종래 기술에 널리 알려져있지만, 본 발명에 사용하기에 특히 적합한 어떤 특정 타입의 RFID 태그는 안테나가 있는 수동 무선주파수 태그이고, 바람직한 실시예에서 집적회로에 연결된 안테나 즉 인덕터코일로 된 RFID 태그이다.
도2는 본 발명과 함께 사용하기 적합한 샘플 RFID 태그(54)의 일반적 세부를 보여준다. 태그(54)는 종래기술에 잘 알려진 대로 판독기나 질문기에 의해 감시되는 구간내에 태그(54)가 있을 때를 검출하는데 사용하는 수동 공진 무선주파수 (RF)회로 (56)을 포함한다. 잘 알려진 한가지 타입의 회로(56)는 코일 안테나 (58)와 커패시터 (60)를 갖고, 이 둘은 소정의 공진 주파수, 즉 선택된 무선주파수를 갖는 공진회로를 구성한다. 태그(54)용 전원은 통상의 방식대로 안테나 (58)로 부터 나온다. 더욱이, 태그(54)는 이 태그(54)에 "정보처리능력" (intelligence)을 제공하기 위한 집적회로(IC)(62)를 포함한다. 이 IC(62)는 회로(56)에 연결된다. IC(62)는 식별데이터의 비트들을 저장하기 위한 64 비트 메모리와 같은 프로그래머블 메모리(64)를 포함한다. 물론, 다른 태그 디자인들이 본 발명에 사용될 수도 있고, 본 발명은 도시된 특정 태그(54)에 한정되지 않는다. 예컨대, 커패시터(60)가 IC(62)에 위치하고 인덕터 코일만이 IC(62)외측에 있을 수 있다.
상기 IC (62)는 거기에 충분한 전원이 인가될 경우 64 비트의 저장된 데이터로 구성된 데이터 스트림을 출력한다. 본 발명의 한 실시예에서 상기 데이터 스트림은 일련의 데이터 펄스 기간동안 상기 코일 안테나(58) 양단에 외부 커패시터(도시안됨)를 개폐함으로써 상기 일련의 데이터 펄스를 발생시킨다. 이로써 상기 RF 회로(56)의 공진주파수를 변경하여 이 공진 주파수를 작동 주파수에서 벗어나게 한다. 따라서 RF 회로(56)가 간단한 응답신호를 되보내는 대신에, RF 회로(56)는 미리 프로그램된 정보 패킷을 담은 신호를 되보낸다. 상기 정보 패킷(데이터 펄스)은 질문기 수신회로에 의해 수신되고 처리되며, 필요한 경우 복호화되어 물품(22)에 대한 식별정보를 제공한다. IC 메모리(64)에 있는 데이터를 사용하여 상기 태그(54)로 부터 식별정보를 출력하는 다른 방법들은 본 발명의 범위에 속한다. IC (62)는 바람직하게 수동소자이고 RF 회로(56)와 동일한 방식으로 (즉, 질문기 송신부 신호로 부터 상기 안테나(58)에 수신된 에너지를 이용함으로써) 구동된다. 그래서, 상기 태그(54)는 소위 "무선주파수 식별(RFID)태그"라 한다. 다른 타입의 RFID 태그들이 본 발명과 함께 사용될 수도 있다. 태그(54)에 사용하기 적합한 다른 RFID 태그들의 예가 미국 특허 제 5,446,447호(Carney 외), 제5,430,441호(Bickley 외) 및 제5,347,263호(Carroll 외)에 도시되어 있다. 전형적으로, RFID 태그들은 물리적으로는 작동정지되지 않는다. 즉, RFID 태그들은 재사용을 방지하는 방식으로 영구적으로 단락되고, 그 안의 자석을 자화시키거나 탈자화시킴으로써 비활성화(inactive)되지 않는다.
도3은 도2에서 설명한 태그(54)와 함께 사용하기 적합한 판독기 즉 질문기 (100)의 블록선도이다. 질문기(100)와 태그(54)는 당분야의 기술에 잘 알려진 대로 유도결합(inductive coupling)에 의해 교신한다. 질문기 (100)는 송신기(102), 수신기(104), 안테나 조립체(106) 및 데이터 처리 및 제어 회로(108)를 포함하며, 각자 입력과 출력을 갖고 있다. 송신기(102)의 출력은 수신기(104)의 제 1 입력에 그리고 안테나 조립체(106)의 입력에 연결되어 있다. 안테나 조립체(106)의 출력은 수신기(104)의 제 2 입력에 연결되어 있다. 상기 데이터 처리 및 제어 회로(108)의 제 1 및 제 2 출력은 송신기(102)의 상기 입력에 그리고 수신기(104)의 제 3입력에 각각 연결되어 있다. 또한, 수신기(104)의 상기 출력은 상기 데이터 처리 및 제어회로(108)의 상기 입력에 연결되어 있다. 이러한 일반적 구성을 갖는 질문기들은 모두 왈튼(Walton)에 특허부여된 미국 특허 제 3,752,960호, 제 3,816,708호, 제 4,223,830호 및 제 4,580,041호에 기술된 회로를 이용하여 구성될 수 있으며 이들 특허들은 본 명세서의 전체에 걸쳐 참고로 병합되어 있다. 질문기(100)는 도1에 예시된 대로 1쌍의 스마트 주각들(36)이나, 휴대용 RFID 스캐너(42)로서 물리적으로 실현된다.
휴대용 스캐너(42)의 한가지 바람직한 실시예는 직경 약 6-8 인치의 플레이트 또는 디스크형 공진회로 안테나를 갖고, 서가의 상단 선반과 하단 선반에 이르는 팔 연장부(arm extension)위에 장착된다.
본 발명의 신규한 시스템들중 어느 하나가 실장되기 전에, 도서관(10)은 물품들(22)에 태그를 달고, 모든 태그달린 물품들(22)의 데이터베이스를 컴퓨터(48) 내에 구축한다. 이상적으로, 도서관 내의 모든 물품들(22)에 태그가 달려 있다. 그러나, 상기 시스템들은 모든 물품에 태그가 달려 있지 않더라도 덜 효율적이지만 작동할 수 있다. 본 발명의 한 실시예에서, 도서관(10)은 공(프로그램안된) 태그들(54)을 받고, (이미 할당되어 있지 않다면) 적절한 프로그래밍에 의해 각 태그들(54)에 독특한 일련번호를 매기고, 각 물품들(22)에 태그들(54)을 물리적으로 붙이고 각 태그(54), 더 자세히 말하자면 그 태그의 독특한 일련번호를 각자의 물품(22)에 상관시키는 데이터베이스를 생성한다. 상기 프로그래밍 공정은 물품들(22)이 이미 태그가 달린채 도서관(10)에 도달하는 경우에 제거된다.
여기에 예시된 실시예에서, 도서관(10)은 태그들(54)을 100개 물품들에 적용한다. 다음에 재고 데이터베이스가 다음의 방식대로 생성된다 :
1. 태그(54)로 부터 상기 독특하게 프로그램된 일련번호를 추출하는 고정 질문기(43) 또는 휴대용 RFID 스캐너(42)에 의해 물품(22)이 판독된다.
2. 상기 일련번호에 데이터베이스 레코드가 부가된다.
3. 다음, 물품(22)위에 있는 기존 바코드 또는 라벨을 읽거나 식별정보를 수동으로 입력하거나 그러한 정보를 다른 데이터베이스나 기억장치로 부터 판독하는 등의 어떤 수단에 의해 물품(22)에 대한 항목식별정보가 얻어진다. 그 다음에 상기 항목식별정보가 상기 각각의 태그 일련번호에 대한 데이터베이스 레코드에 부가된다. 대부분의 대형 도서관들은 그 소장품(즉, 물품들 22)의 기존 데이터베이스로 부터 발생되는 자동화된 온라인 카탈로그를 이미 갖추고 있다. 그래서, 도서관(10)은 태그달린 물품(22)에 대한 정보의 완전 새로운 데이터베이스를 생성하기 보다는 물품(22)에 부착된 특정 태그(54)의 일련번호를 확인하기 위해 기존 데이터 필드에 정보를 추가할 필요가 있을 뿐이다. 다른 방법으로는 도서관(10)은 기존 온라인 카탈로그를 유지하고 상기 태그달린 물품(22)의 상태를 추적하는 새로운 데이터베이스를 생성할 수도 있다. 아래의 설명은 도서관(10)이 완전히 집적된 데이터베이스를 구축하거나 온라인 카탈로그정보가 상기 태그된 물품 데이터베이스와 링크되어 있어 물품(22)에 관한 모든 가용 정보가 용이하게 검색될 수 있다는 것을 가정하고 있다. 도서관 소장품에 있는 물품들(22)의 데이터베이스는 물품(22)이 체크아웃되었는지 여부, 누가 그것을 체크아웃하였는지, 그리고 반환기일이 언제인지 (즉, 물품 기일데이터)와 같은 순환상태정보(도시안됨)도 포함한다.
도4는 전술한 프로세스에 의해 생성된 일련의 데이터베이스 레코드들 샘플이다. 각 레코드는 태그 식별정보(즉 상기 태그(22)의 일련번호)용 필드와 항목식별정보용 필드를 포함한다. 태그 식별정보는 "물품 식별정보"와 상관하고, 그래서 "물품식별정보"라고도 한다. 즉, 태그 일련번호가 독특하기 때문에 상기 물품을 식별하는데 사용될 수 있다. 항목식별정보는 듀이식 십진체계 도서신청번호 (Dewey Decimal System call number), 미국 국회도서관 도서신청번호(Library of Congress call number), ISBN번호, 또는 임의할당번호일 수 있다. 항목 식별정보의 마지막 숫자는 도서관의 재고에 있는 상기 항목의 복사번호(copy number)를 확인하는 데 사용될 수 있다. 항목식별정보는 제목, 저자, 출판자 등과 같은 서지데이터의 어떤 부분을 포함할 수도 있다. 선택적으로, 상기 데이터베이스 레코드는 상기 물품(22)이 저장되는 대형 도서관 시스템의 소정 장소와 같은 부가정보를 포함할 수 있다. 전형적으로 대학교들은 주 도서관 외에 별도의 과 도서관을 갖고 있다. 대형 정부 도서관 시스템들은 다수의 지소들을 갖고 있다. 상기 부가적인 장소정보는 그러한 각자의 장소들로써 상기 물품들(22)을 적절히 식별하는 데 사용될 수 있다(별도의 데이터베이스로 구축되건 상기 기존 온라인 카탈로그(26)에 부속되건). 태그달린 물품들(22)의 데이터베이스는 컴퓨터(48)에 데이터베이스(66)로 저장되지만, 원격 컴퓨터(도시안됨)에 저장될 수도 있다.
데이터베이스(66)는 각 물품(22)의 체크아웃 상태를 유지하는 필드와 상기 물품(22)의 현재 장소를 유지하는 필드를 선택적으로 포함할 수도 있다. 예컨대, 체크아웃된 물품은 상기 체크아웃상태 필드에서 체크아웃된 것으로 표시되고 상기 물품을 체크아웃한 고객이 고객식별번호는 고객 ID 필드에 저장된다. 고객 ID 필드는 상기 물품이 현재 도서관 선반에 있다는 것을 의미하고(예컨대, 제로 (000000)이 상기 고객 ID 필드에 저장된다), 상기 물품이 반환되었으나 아직 선반 재배열되지 않았음을 나타낼 수도 있다(예컨대, 000001이 고객 ID 필드에 저장된다). 상기 체크아웃 상태와 상기 고객 ID 필드 뿐 아니라 다른 필드들이 별도의 데이터베이스에 저장되거나 또는 링크된 목록으로 저장될 수 있고, 다른 정보가 데이터베이스(66)에 저장되거나 데이터베이스(66)에 링크될 수도 있다고 본다.

상기 컴퓨터 단말(52)은 상기 체크아웃 단계들을 통해 고객을 자극하고, 각 물품질문의 결과를 검증하는 메시지와 같은 상기 단계들에 관한 정보를 보내는데 사용될 수 있다. 컴퓨터 단말(52)은 상기 물품(22)에 관한 마감일을 고객에게 알리기도 하며, 선택적으로 상기 고객에 대해 체크아웃계약과 마감일의 레코드를 발생하는 프린터를 포함할 수 있다.

북드롭(32)의 다른 실시예들에서는 쟁반(138)이 없다. 대신에 상기 물품들(22)이 틈새(slot)를 통해 북드롭(32)에 낙하되어 수집통(112) 안으로 직접 떨어질 뿐이다. 이 물품들(22)은 수집통(112)안으로 떨어질 적에 또는 그 수집통(112)이 비워지기 전에 한번에 모두 질문기(100)에 의해 판독된다. 물품들(22)이 한번에 모두 질문받으면, 질문기(100)의 범위는 수집통(112)의 모든 지역에 도달하기에 충분하기만 하면 된다.
외부 북드롭들이 갖는 하나의 문제점은 가끔 야만족들이 앞서 북드롭에 삽입된 물품들을 손상시키거나 북드롭 자체를 손상시키려 한다는 것이다. 예컨대, 야만인이 북드롭안에 액체나 더러운 음식 찌꺼기를 부어 넣을 수도 있다. 최악의 경우에는, 야만인이 가연성 액체나 불붙은 물건을 북드롭안에 집어넣고 그 안에서 불을 피우려 하기도 한다. 야만인들이 외부 스마트 북드롭(32)의 내부부분들에 접근하는 것을 최소화하기 위해서 북드롭(32)은 도5에 설명한 것과 유사한 고객 ID장치(68)와, 쟁반(138)에 접근을 하게 하는 액세스도어(140)를 포함할 수 있다. 액세스도어(140)는 고객이 권한부여된 사용자인 경우에만 열린다.
북드롭(32)은 들러붙는 물품(22)으로 인한 걸림(jam)을 검출하는 수단과 컴퓨터(48)에 이 걸림을 보고하는 수단을 포함할 수 있다. 질문기(100)가 연장된 시간주기동안 질문구간(110)에서 동일한 일련번호를 반복적으로 검출하면 걸림이 일어날 수 있다.
정기적인 간격으로 도서관 종업원들은 수집통(112)을 비우고 물품들(22)을 선반에 재배열한다. 모든 물품들이 적절하게 다시 체크인되도록 하기 위하여 도서관 종업원들은 물품들(22)이 선반에 다시 얹히기 전에 상기 수집통(112)를 질문하고자 한다. 선택적으로, 체크인 판독기는 책 낙하 또는 책반환 처리작업공간에 인접하여 위치할 수 있고, 여기서 종업원은 물품들(22)이 분류 및 처리과정의 일부로서 질문받도록 할 수 있다. 체크인 질문기와 연관된 단말은 특별한 처리요건 등에 대하여 종업원에게 지시를 줄 수도 있다.
상기 외부 북드롭(32)에 의해 발생된 데이터는 데이터베이스 (66)에 의해 사용되어 통내용보고(bin contents report)와 선반재배열보고(reshelving report)를 생성한다. 이 통내용보고는 수집통(112)을 통해 물리적으로 분류하지 않고서 수집통(112)안에 찾는 특정 물품이 있는 지를 신속하게 판단하는 데 사용될 수 있다. 상기 통내용보고는 정상적으로 계속 보존되거나 다른 고객에 의해 요청되었던 물품을 눈에 띄게할 수도 있다. 통내용보고는 수집통(112)에 있는 물품들(22)에 대한 일반적 데이터를 제공하기도 한다. 통내용보고의 한가지 타입은 물품 선반재배열에 사용되는 선반 재배열보고이다. 도서관들은 소장품의 물품들(즉, 서적, 정기간행물 등)을 서가에 재배열하는 데 엄청난 양의 노동자원을 쏟아붓고 있다. 전형적으로, 모든 물품들(22)은 중앙장소로 보내어지고, 장소(즉, 마루, 선반 또는 서가, 횡렬)마다 분류되고, 다른 카트(cart)위에 놓여지고 각각의 서가배열장소들로 운반된다. 선반 재배열 보고는 물품들(22)을 서가에 재배열하는 데 소모되는 시간과 노력을 극적으로 절감시키는데 사용될 수 있다.

이와 같이 분류된 선반배열보고(116)를 제공함으로써 선반재배열과정을 보조할 수 있다. 예컨대, 상기 보고(116)를 사용하여 선반을 재배열하는 한가지 방법에 있어서, 종업원은 상기 선반배열보고(116)상에 기록된 상기 제 1 장소로 상기 수집통(112)을 이동시키고 상기 보고(116)에 따라 상기 제1물품(22)을 상기 수집통(112)에 위치시키고, 이 제1물품을 선반에 놓는다. 이런 과정을 상기 선반 재배열보고(116)에 따라 각 물품(22)에 대해 반복된다. 수집통(112)이 이동하지 못하면, 상기 물품들(22)이 이동카트(movable cart)로 전달되기만 하면 되고 위의 과정이 상기 이동카드를 이리 저리로 이동시킴으로써 수행될 수 있다. 선반 재배열보고 (116)는 바람직하게도 도서관을 통해 미리 프로그램된 최단 경로 루트를 이용하도록 지시받는다. 미리 지정된 장소들로부터 최단경로 루트를 발생시키는 것은 종래기술에 널리 알려져 있다.
도1을 다시 보면, 도서관(10)은 공중지역(16) 및/또는 종업원 공간지역(18)에 1개이상의 내부 스마트 북드롭들(34)을 포함한다. 이 내부 북드롭들(34)은 그안에 놓인 대부분의 물품들(22)이 도서관 고객이 도서관에 있는 동안 사용하지만 체크아웃되지 않은 물품들(22)이라는 것을 제외하면 외부 북드롭(32)과 유사하다. 그래서, 상기 반환된 물품들의 상태를 갱신하여 이 물품들이 다시 체크인되는 것을 나타낼 필요가 없다. 그러나 컴퓨터(48)내 데이터베이스(66)는 체크되고 필요하면 갱신도어야 한다. 왜냐하면 내부 북드롭들(34)에 놓인 어떤 물품(22)은 고객이 반환하고 있는 이미 체크아웃된 물품들(22)일 수 있기 때문이다.
통내용보고는 내부 북드롭(34)에서도 발생된다(그 보고는 이런 정보가 어느곳에서나 추적되기 때문에 고객들이 반환하고 있는 이미 체크아웃된 물품들(22)를 포함하지 않는다). 통내용보고들은 도서관(10)내에서 고객들이 사용하지만 체크아웃되지 않은 물품들(22)의 사용이력보고를 발생하기 위하여 일정 시간주기동안 축적되었다가 사용된다. 이런 정보는 도서관(10)이 그 소장품의 물품들(22)에 관한 내부 사용 데이터를 포착할 수 있게 하므로 극히 유용하다. 도서관들은 소장품의 물품들의 사용 패턴을 끊임없이 평가해서 고객 관심사의 흐름을 판단하고, 어떤 타입의 새로운 물픔들(22)을 구입할 것인지, 물품들(22)을 도서관 마루에서 언제 치울것인지, 어떻게 하면 마루공간이 가장 유효하게 사용되는 지를 결정하며, 다른 관리업무들을 지원한다. 현재 도서관들은 이러한 문제들을 평가하기 위하여 체크아웃 데이터, 도서관 직원들의 관찰, 그리고 고객들의 촌평과 요구사항에 의존하고 있다. 그러나, 체크아웃 데이터는 도서관과 연관된 고객활동의 모두를 포착하지는 않는다. 전형적으로 고객들은 자신에게 관심이 있는 모든 물품(22)을 체크아웃하지 않는다. 상당한 비율의 물품들(22)이 체크아웃될 수 없는 참조항목이다. 어떤 고객들은 어떤 물품들을 체크아웃하고 이것들을 도서관에서만 읽도록 하는데 당황할 수 있다. 고객이 도서관에 있는 동안 물품(22)에서 관심있는 정보를 신속하게 얻을 수 있으므로 어떤 물품들(22)은 체크아웃될 필요가 없다. 도서관 직원들의 관찰과 고객들의 촌평 및 요구사항도 어떤 고객들의 관심사항을 정확하게 포착하지 못할 수 있다. 내부 북드롭 데이터에 의해 발생된 사용이력보고는 도서관이 고객의 경향과 관심사를 더 잘 포착할 수 있게 한다.
도8은 사용이력보고(136)의 샘플이다. 물론, 그 데이터는 어떤 적절한 필드로 제시되고 분류된다. 마찬가지로, 내부 북드롭들(34)의 사용이력보고(136)는 체크아웃된 물품들(22)의 사용이력보고(도시안됨)와 병합되어 모든 고객들에게 관심있는 물품들(22)의 보다 정확한 그림을 얻을 수 있다.
물품들(22)을 가장 효과적으로 선반에 다시 얹기 위하여 내부와 외부 북드롭들(34)(32)에 놓인 모든 물품들이 주기적으로 단일 이동 카트로 보내어지고, 내부 및 외부 북드롭들(34)(32)로 부터의 선반재배열보고가 상기 단일 카트의 단일 선반재배열보고와 병합될 수 있다.
북드롭(32)(34)의 내용에서 나온 정보는 다른 고객들이 요청한 특히 "인기있는(hot)" 물품(22)을 배치하는 데 사용될 수도 있다. 현재 도서관 직원들은 상대적으로 소수의 인기있는 물품들(22)을 순환시키면서 불균등한 시간을 허비하고 있다. 어느 북드롭(32,34)이 인기있는 물품(22)을 담고 있는지를 정확히 알면 그 인기물품(22)을 재순환시키는데 허비하는 시간과 노력이 절감된다.
도9는 도1에 있는 도서관(10)을 위한 선반 스캐닝 재고조사시스템(120)을 나타낸다. 시스템(120)은 재고조사를 수행하고 물품들(22)이 적절한 선반에 배치되어 있는지를 확인하는 데 사용된다. 도서관의 전체 소장품을 재고조사한다는 것은 극히 노동집약적이고 실수하기 쉬운 활동이다. 시스템(120)을 사용함으로써 재고조사 과정이 크게 단순화되고 숙련도 낮은 종업원에 의해 수행될 수 있다. 따라서 재고조사체크는 현재의 실무보다 더 자주 수행될 수 있다.
상기 시스템(120)은 출력이 휴대형 컴퓨터(122)에 연결된 휴대형 RFID 스캐너(42)를 사용하여 실장된다. 이 휴대형 컴퓨터(122)는 상기 RFID 스캐너(42)에 의해 수집된 상기 데이터를 메모리(130)에 저장하고 이 데이터를 컴퓨터(48)에 다운로드하여 데이터베이스(66)를 갱신한다. 본발명의 한 실시예에서 휴대형 컴퓨터(122)와 컴퓨터(48) 각각은 상기 휴대형 컴퓨터(122)가 상기 스캐너 데이터를 컴퓨터(48)에 계속 보낼 수 있게 하는 무선통신장치(132)를 포함한다. 본 발명의 다른 실시예에서 상기 휴대형 컴퓨터(122)는 정기적으로 하드와이어되거나 (hardwired) 그렇지 않으면 컴퓨터(48)에 물리적으로 접속되어 상기 데이터를 메모리(130)에 다운로드한다.

도9 및 도10을 참조하면, 상기 제 1 부분(1261)은 스캐너(42)로 부터 연장하는 소정구간(134)내에 있다. 바람직하게는 스캐너(42)에서 방출하는 질문 신호의 강도는 선반(124)의 제 1 부분 (1261)위에 있는 모든 물품들(22)을 효과적으로 질문하는 데는 충분하지만 인접한 선반 열들상의 물품들에 도달하는 데는 충분하지 않은 강도이다. 이런 특징은 선반들에 평행한 상기 소정구간 (134)을 분리하는 가상 점선에 의해 도10에 도시되어 있다.
도서관(10)의 모든 물품 보유 장소들이 스캐닝된 후에 상기 검출된 일련번호들은 체크아웃되지 않은 물품들의 데이터베이스(66)에 저장된 도서관 재고목록과 비교된다. 상기 스캐닝 과정 중에 위치되지 않았고 체크아웃되지 않은 모든 물품들(22)의 분실 물품보고가 발생된다. 어떤 물품(22)이 분실된 것으로 추정되기 전에 그 물품이 상기 스캐닝 과정에 의해서만 분실되었는지 또는 태그가 분실되었거나 결함이 있는지 여부를 판단하기 위해 선반이 물리적으로 검사되어야 한다.
시스템(120)은 잘못 놓이거나 잘못 배열된 물품(22)을 확인하는 데도 사용될 수 있다. 각 구간(134)이 질문될 적에, 상기 판독된 태그들 가운데 어떤 태그가 상기 스캐닝된 부분(126)에 속하지 않는 물품들과 연관되어 있는 지를 조사하기 위하여 상기 휴대용 컴퓨터(122) 및/또는 컴퓨터(48)가 체크한다. 예컨대, 상기 구간(134)이 호출번호 AD-140-XXXX 에서 AD-190-XXXX 까지의 서적을 망라하면 이 범위 밖에 있는 호출번호를 갖고 있는 어떤 물품들(22)은 잘못 배열된 것으로 추정된다. 휴대형 컴퓨터(122)는 종업원에게 신호를 보내어 상기 잘못 배열된 물품(22)을 위치시켜 적절히 배열하게 할 수 있다. 인접한 호출번호들을 갖는 물품들(22)이 선반위에 바뀌어 놓여질 때 (예컨대, AD-140-332D가 그것이 속한 AD-140-332E의 좌측이 아니라 우측에 있는 경우)와 같이 여러가지 사소한 재배열 오차들은 이런 방법으로는 검출되지 않는다는 것을 알아야 한다.
본 발명에 사용되는 태그 질문기와 스캐너는 질문기를 동시에 통과되거나 동시에 스캐닝되는 다수의 물품들(22)을 검출할 수 있다. 대부분의 경우에 상기 물품들(22)이 서로 물리적으로 근접한 경우에는 상기 각 물품들(22)은 상이한 순간에 질문 신호를 수신하고 이에 응답한다. 반환된 신호들 열이 처리되어 개별 ID들을 가려낸다. 그러나 두개의 물품들이 완전 동일한 순간에 ID신호를 반환하면 상기 질문기 또는 스캐너는 상기 반환된 신호들을 가려내어 상기 2개의 구분된 ID들을 회수한다. 다른 방법으로는 상기 질문기 또는 스캐너는 상기 동시에 수신된 신호들을 무시하고, 동시에 수신되지 않아 개별 ID들을 가려내는 후속 반환 신호들을 사용할 수도 있다.
한정없이 본 발명의 다른 변형들을 열거하면 다음과 같다.
(1) 일련번호를 저장하고 출력하는 대신에, 태그(54)는 물품의 제목 또는 호출번호와 같은 물품자체의 데이터를 저장하고 출력할 수 있다. 서적 출판업자들은 책이 인쇄된 시점에 산업인식화 부호체계(industry recognized coding scheme)을 사용하여 태그들(54)을 부착하고 프로그램할 수 있다.
(2) 상술한 바와 같이, 태그(54)는 "쓰기(write)" 능력을 가질 수 있어 태그가 물품(22)의 순환 또는 체크아웃 상태에 관한 데이터를 저장하게 할 수 있다. 이 쓰기 능력을 물품의 마감일 뿐만 아니라 그 물품(22)을 체크아웃한 고객에 관한 데이터를 저장하는데 사용될 수도 있다.
(3) 도9 에 있는 상기 스캐닝된 부분(126)의 초점이 매우 작고 좁아 한번에한 두개의 물품(22)만이 스캐닝되게 할 수 있다. 그래서, 도10 의 구간(134)은 한두개의 물품들(22)만을 감당할 수도 있다. 예컨대, 도11은 선반(124)내에 있는 한줄(144)의 물품들(22)을 따라 RFID 스캐너(42)가 이동하는 체계를 보여준다. 각 줄(144)은 따로따로 스캐닝된다.(명료하도록 스캐너(42)의 맨위 부분만이 도11에 도시되어 있다.) 구간(134)을 좁히면 스캐너(42)가 각 선반을 포괄하기 위해 더 자주 물리적으로 이동되어야 하므로 재고조사를 실행하는데 소요되는 시간이 증가된다. 그러나, 더 좁은 구간을 스캐닝함으로써 잘못 배열된 물품들(22)이 더욱 용이하게 배치된다. 예컨대, 물품들(22)이 하나씩 하나씩 스캐닝되면 상기 시스템 컴퓨터(66) 및/또는(122)은 각 물품이 순차적으로 더 큰 (또는 더 작은)호출번호를 갖는 지를 확인할 수 있다. 이런 식으로 바뀌어놓인 인접 물품들(22)이 검출될 수 있다.
(4) 도5의 고객 셀프 체크아웃시스템(50)은 과실 고객이 벌금을 지불하게 하도록 컴퓨터 단말(52)에 연결된 청구서 카드 판독기(142)를 선택적으로 포함할 수 있다. 이런 방식으로, 그 고객은 과실을 신속하게 치유하고, 곧장 후속 물품(22)을 체크아웃하도록 권한을 부여 받는다.

(6) 휘귀서적 또는 멀티미디어 제품(즉, 시디롬들)과 같이 어떤 물품에는 태그를 붙이기가 용이하지 않는 적이 가끔 있다. 따라서, 고객의 신분카드는 물품의 사용을 추적하거나 그 물품이 사용될 도서관의 선택된 지역 안팎으로의 접근을 제어하는데 사용될 수 있다. 이런 체계에서, 고객 ID카드는 바람직하게 RFID 태그달린 카드일 수 있다. 예컨대, 고객이 어떤 항목을 멀티미디어랩(multi-media lab)에서 빌린다면, 고객의 RFID 카드와 물품의 자켓 또는 홀더(태그 달린)가 판독되어 서로 연관된다. 물품이 매우 비싼경우 (예컨대, 옥스포드 영어사전 CD-ROM 8판은 도서관에서 1부 복사당 895 달러이다.), 멀티미디어랩의 출구는 고객이 홀더뿐만 아니라 CD-ROM세트를 반환하기 전에 랩을 나가려하면 폐쇄될 수 있다.
(7) 스마트 주각들(36)은 종래 (넌인텔리전트) 불활성화 공진 태그들과 태그들(54) 모두 검출하도록 고안될 수 있다. 이런 방식으로 적절하게 불활성화되지 않은 종래 태그달린 물품들의 이동을 검출하는데 동일한 질문장치가 사용될 수 있다. 마찬가지로, 덤 주각들(40)은 태그(54)와 종래 (넌인텔리전트)불활성화 공진 태그들을 검출하도록 고안될 수 있다. 이런 방식으로, 정기간행물실(23)의 안팎을 지나가는 RFID 태그 달린 물품이 검출된다.
(8) 도4에 도시된 데이터베이스 레코드는 각 태그달린 물품(22)에 대한 보안 필드(security field)를 포함할 수 있다. 이 보안필드는 물품(22)의 순환에 대한 조건들을 식별할 수 있다. 예컨대, 상기 보안필드는 물품(22)이 정기간행물실(23)이나 전술한 멀티미디어랩 안에 있어야 한다고 지시할 수 있다. 상기 보안필드는 물품(22)이 대학원생과 같은 선택된 고객이거나 다른 소정집단의 고객에 의해서만 체크아웃될 수 있다고 지시할 수 있다. 이러한 조건들은 물품(22)이 체크아웃 카운터 또는 주각(36)에서 검출될 때 컴퓨터(48)에 의해 체크된다.
(9) "체크아웃"이란 단어는 전형적으로 도서관으로 부터 서적등을 대출하는 것과 연관되어 있다. 그러나, 물품의 "체크아웃"은 내용상 물품의 "이동(removal)"과 대등하며 체크아웃은 반드시 저장소에서 물품을 대출하는 것을 내포하는 것은 아니다.
(10) 본 발명의 바람직한 실시예들이 출구에서 주각 쌍들을 사용하지만 적절한 경우에 단일 주각 질문기 (single pedestal interrogator)가 사용될 수 있다.
(11) 선택된 물품들의 데이터베이스 레코드들은 물품이 존재하지 않고도 허가 받은 도서관 직원에 의해 변경될 수 있다. 예컨대, 기간도과된 물품이 검출되면 도서관 입구의 경보가 개시하도록 설정하는 것이 바람직하다. 고객이 적절히 체크아웃된 물품을 도서관에 가져오면 도서관 직원이 물품의 존재를 경보받도록 마감일전에 물품을 회수하는 것이 바람직할 수 있다.
당분야의 기술에 숙달된 자라면 전술한 실시예들의 넓은 발명개념을 벗어나지 않고 변경이 가해질 수 있을 것이다. 그러므로 본 발명은 제시된 특정 실시예에 한정되지 않지만, 첨부한 청구범위들에 의해 정의되는 본 발명의 정신과 범위내에서 수정 사항들이 포함될 것이다.

Claims (28)

  1. 저장소(storage area)에 유지되는 물품들과 연관하여 사용할 재고 통제시스템으로서,상기 각 물품에는 무선주파수 태그가 붙어있고, 각 태그는 질문신호 (interrogation signal)를 수신하고 응답신호(response signal)를 되보냄으로써 상기 물품의 존재를 검출하는데 사용되는 안테나와, 상기 안테나에 연결되어 물품식별 정보를 저장하고 상기 태그의 질문시에 상기 물품식별정보를 상기 응답신호로써 출력하는 집적회로를 포함하는 재고통제시스템으로서,
    (a) 상기 저장소에서 이동되었다가 상기 저장소로 반환될 물품들을 받는 적어도 하나의 물품반환소(at least one article return area)로서 상기 반환된 물품은 그 물품이 반환될 적에 일정 구간(zone)을 통과하는 적어도 하나의 물품반환소 ;
    (b) 상기 구간내 태그의 존재에 의해 발생되는 응답신호 형태의 교란에 대해 상기 구간을 감시하는 질문기(interrogator)로서, 상기 질문기는 태그가 상기 구간에서 검출될 때 질문기 출력신호를 출력하고, 각 질문기 출력신호는 질문받은 태그의 상기 집적회로에 저장된 상기 식별정보를 포함하는 상기 질문기 ; 및
    (c) 상기 질문기 출력신호들을 수신하는 데이터베이스로서, 상기 데이터베이스는 체크아웃 상태 데이터를 포함하며 상기 시스템에 의해 감시되는 물품들의 재고 데이터를 포함하고, 상기 수신된 질문기 출력신호들이 상기 체크아웃상태 데이터를 갱신하는데 사용되는 상기 데이터베이스를 포함하는 재고통제시스템.

    (a) 이동형 질문기로 상기 저장소의 일부분을 스캐닝하는 단계로서, 상기 이동형 질문기는 상기 질문기로 부터 연장하는 소정 구간 내에 태그들의 존재로 인한 응답신호형태의 교란을 검출하고 태그가 상기 구간에서 검출될 때 질문기 출력신호를 출력하고, 각 질문기 출력신호는 질문받은 태그의 상기 집적회로에 저장된 상기 식별 정보를 포함하는 상기 스캐닝단계 ;
    (b) 상기 저장소의 인접부분과 상기 저장소의 나머지 부분들 모두에 대해 상기 (a)단계를 반복하는 단계 ; 및
    (c) 데이터베이스에 상기 질문기 출력신호를 수신하는 단계로서, 상기 데이터베이스는 상기 저장소에 유지된 물품들에 관한 재고데이터를 포함하고, 상기 수신된 질문기출력신호가 상기 재고 데이터를 갱신하는데 사용되는 상기 수신단계를 포함하는 재고통제방법.

    (b) 상기 저장소의 불연속 부분들을 스캐닝하고, 이동형 질문기에서 연장하는 소정구간내 태그들의 존재로 인하여 생긴 응답신호 형태로 교란을 검출하고, 태그가 상기 구간에서 검출된 때 질문기 출력신호를 출력하는 이동형 질문기로서, 각 질문기 출력신호는 질문받은 태그의 상기 집적회로에 저장된 상기 식별정보를 포함하고, 상기 재고 데이터베이스는 상기 식별정보를 수신하고 상기 식별정보를 이용하여 그 안에 저장된 상기 물품들의 순환 상태를 갱신하는 상기 이동형 질문기를 포함하는 도서관 재고통제시스템.

  25. 제 19 항에 있어서,
    상기 태그는 물리적으로 해제되지 않는 태그인 상기 시스템.
  26. 제 19 항에 있어서,
    상기 도서관은 정기간행물실을 포함하고, 상기 시스템은 상기 정기간행물실의 출구에 위치하여 그 출구로부터 태그달린 물품들의 이동을 검출하는 구간 질문기(zone interrogator)를 더 포함하는 상기 시스템.
  27. 제 26 항에 있어서,
    상기 구간 질문기는 상기 정기간행물실로 부터 물품의 이동을 검출함에 응답하여 경보를 작동시키는 상기 시스템.
  28. 도서관에 유지되는 물품들과 연관하여 사용할 도서관 재고통제시스템에서, 각 물품에는 무선주파수 태그가 부착되어 있고, 각 태그는 질문 신호를 수신하고 응답신호를 되보냄으로써 상기 물품의 존재를 검출하는 데 사용하는 안테나와, 상기 안테나에 연결되어 물품식별정보를 저장하고 질문기에 의한 상기 태그의 질문시에 상기 응답신호로써 상기 물품식별정보를 출력하는 집적회로를 포함하는 도서관 재고통제시스템에 있어서,
    도서관에 있는 물품들의 목록과 그러한 물품 각각의 순환상태를 포함하는 재고 데이터베이스;
    상기 시스템에 대해 고객을 식별하는 고객식별장치;
    상기 도서관의 물품 반출소에 위치한 물품 체크아웃시스템으로서, 상기 체크아웃시스템은 고객이 상기 도서관에서 이동하고자 하는 물품을 질문하는 제 1 질문기를 포함하고, 상기 제 1 질문기는 상기 이동될 물품에 대한 상기 저장된 물품식별정보를 내포한 응답신호를 수신하는 상기 물품체크아웃시스템;
    상기 제 1 질문기 및 상기 데이터베이스와 통신하는 프로세서로서, 상기 프로세서는 상기 제 1 질문기로 부터 상기 이동될 물품의 물품식별정보와 상기 고객식별정보를 수신하고, 상기 이동될 물품의 상기 순환상태로써 상기 재고 데이터베이스를 갱신하는 상기 프로세서;
    상기 반출소의 이미지들을 포착하고 상기 포착된 이미지들의 비디오신호를 출력하는 비디오 카메라;
    비디오 저장매체에 상기 비디오 신호를 저장하는 비디오 레코더;
    상기 도서관에서 이동되었던 물품들을 접수하기 위한 적어도 하나의 물품반환소를 포함하는 물품 체크인 시스템으로서, 상기 반환된 물품 각각은 상기 물품이 반환될 적에 체크인 구간을 통과하는 상기 물품 체크인 시스템;
    상기 재고 데이터베이스와 통신하는 제 2 질문기로서, 상기 제 2 질문기는 상기 체크인 구간내에 있는 태그의 존재로 인한 응답신호 형태의 교란에 대해 상기 체크인 구간을 감시하고, 태그가 상기 구간에서 검출될 적에 질문기 출력신호를 출력하고, 상기 질문기 출력신호 각각은 상기 반환되는 물품에 대해 질문받은 태그의 상기 집적회로에 저장된 상기 식별정보를 포함하고, 상기 재고 데이터베이스는 상기 질문기 출력신호들을 수신하고 상기 질문기 출력신호들을 사용하여 상기 반환되는 물품의 체크아웃 상태를 갱신하는 상기 제 2 질문기 ;
    상기 도서관의 불연속 부분들을 스캐닝하고, 이동식 질문기에서 연장하는 소정 구간내 태그들의 존재에 의해 야기된 응답신호 형태의 교란을 검출하고, 태그가 상기 구간에서 검출될 때 질문기 출력신호를 출력하는 상기 이동식 질문기로서, 질문기 출력신호 각각은 질문받은 태그의 상기 집적회로에 저장된 상기 식별정보를 포함하고, 상기 데이터베이스는 상기 식별정보를 수신하고 이 데이터베이스에 저장된 상기 물품들의 순환상태를 상기 식별정보로써 갱신하는 상기 이동식 질문기;
    도서관의 출구를 감시하는 출구 질문기로서, 상기 출구 질문기는 상기 출구를 통과함으로써 상기 도서관에서 이동되는 물품을 질문하고 상기 출구 질문기는 상기 물품과 연관된 상기 태그로 부터 응답신호를 수신하고, 상기 응답신호는 상기 출구를 통과하는 물품에 대한 상기 저장된 물품식별정보를 포함하는 상기 출구 질문기;
    상기 출구 질문기에 결합된 출구 프로세서로서, 상기 출구 프로세서는 상기출구 질문기로 부터 상기 응답신호의 상기 식별정보를 포함하는 출력신호를 수신하고, 상기 출구 프로세서는 상기 수신된 식별정보와 상기 데이터베이스에 저장된 정보를 비교하여 상기 물품이 체크아웃된 것으로 상기 데이터베이스에 기록되어 있는 지를 판단하고, 상기 출구를 통과하는 물품이 체크아웃된 것으로 상기 데이터베이스에 기록되어 있지 않으면 상기 출구 질문기가 경보를 작동시키는 상기 출구 프로세서; 및
    상기 도서관의 소정지역의 출구에 위치하며 상기 소정지역으로부터 태그달린 물품들의 이동을 검출하기 위한 구간 질문기로서, 상기 소정지역으로 부터 물품 이동의 검출에 응답하여 경보를 작동시키는 상기 구간 질문기를 포함하는 도서관 재고통제시스템.
