Description

点火先端部５０は、接合された材料８４から切取られると、拾い上げられて、次いでスパークプラグの上に組立てられる。もちろん、スパークプラグ１０の上に組立てる前に、特定の任意の組立ステップを行なってもよい。ベース電極４２と溶接材料５４との間の接着をよりよくするために、図１０Ａに示すようにリベットヘッド６０を溶接端部５４に追加するなど、特定の加工動作を点火先端部５０に対して行なってもよい。リベットヘッド６０を点火先端部５０に追加する１つの方法は、点火先端部５０を頭部ダイ（heading die）９６と整列させて、点火先端部５０を頭部ダイ９６に押込むという方法である。点火
先端部５０は孔開け機９４によって支持されており、孔開け機９４は次いで点火ピン５０を頭部ダイ９６に押込んで、リベットヘッド６０を形成する。孔開け機９４はまた、イリジウム端部に押込まれて溶接端部５４を変形させ、リベット６０に向かわせるキックアウトピン（図示せず）を用いて、中空の態様で形成されてもよい。イリジウムおよび他の貴金属合金は概して非常に脆いので、イリジウム部分を孔開け機９４で支持することによって放電端部５２が砕けるのを防止する。次いで、リベットヘッド６０をベース電極４２上の空洞の中に配置し、次いでレーザ１００などによって溶接することによって、図１０Ｂおよび図１１に示すように点火先端部５０を取付け得る。ベース電極４２、より具体的には中心電極アセンブリ４０の点火端部４４をさらに形成するために他の加工ステップも行なってもよい。
